Fender JP 90 club?

Glad to see the JP-90 club is still rocking!

I kind of diverted for a number of months into mandolin, acoustic guitar, then I got on a "dad-rock" kick on electric guitar. Lately, bass has been calling my name. During the 'rona-era, I managed to collect a USA Geddy Lee Jazz Bass and a Rick 4003, all very cool in their own way. Love all three!

I'm looking to step out and play again, after a 20-year hiatus from playing out or even with a band. Gave it a whirl a couple of weeks ago and predictably, laid an egg. But at least, it was on guitar, so little harm done there! LOL.

When I step out with the bass, it's gonna be the JP-90 for sure. It's still my favorite for "stand up and play". Just got

I've had my 4001 out all summer as my "noodling while watching TV" bass, but just a few days ago I got a hankering for something a little more lively. So?

Hello, can anyone suggest tuning machine replacements for a JP-90?

I picked up a nice neck but have no idea how to size tuners. Any suggestions are appreciated. Looking at Hipshot for the bass extenders but no married to the brand.

I’ve looked at the Gotoh lightweight tuners, really nice and reduce the neck weight a bit. Gotoh is good stuff.

In case anyone is interested in seeing how a BT1 model d-tuner fits on their beloved JP90…

I did have to drill all four screw holes. It was not difficult. I think a different Hipshot product might be a direct fit, but I had the BT1 on hand and I wasn’t doing anything else with it.

I just bought this JP-90 from year I graduated High School-1990. The pickguard was cracked so I got a new 3-ply and the bridge pickup had been replaced with what looks to be a standard Fender pickup. I’m on the hunt for an original and I have an ad in the Gear Wanted section. I’m digging it and might bring it to the luthier soon to really get it dialed in. It needs a fret leveling if I want to get the action lower but it’s getting factory spec action as it is.

Where'd you find a replacement pickguard? Was it already to go or did you have to cut it yourself so fourth and so on?

WD products has them and can custom cut whatever color and plies and thickness you want.

Don't really want to take the neck off when it gets here Friday unless I need to.

Only way to be certain is date stamps if legible. Possibly codes on the electronics if still original.

It is interesting that it appears that the truss rod isn’t at the heel of the neck. Most of the earlier production has a truss rod adjustment at the heel, and later ones like mine have a truss rod adjust on the headstock.

But who knows, serials and production changes don’t always coincide with the rest of production date characteristics.

Be interesting to see what the electronics are. I suspect they’re upgraded. The standard electronics are on a par with the cheapest imports. The PU selector is t stock.

Well, it’s here and it’s gorgeous. I wish I knew who refinished it as the store sold it on consignment and wouldn’t give owners name without their permission.

This looks to be one piece of wood unless it’s a veneer on top and bottom. I’ll open it up some time later.

No runs, drips, bubbles or any other irregularities on the clear coat that I can find.

Came with the hsc case, but not original Fender case

I think @JIO and @TK4261 would appreciate this refinish job on this obscure 7ender

I think it might be a standard J-bass body. Hard to say from the pictures, the JP90 is narrowed a good bit across the bouts vs the J-bass body.

It is really easy to see it in form fit case for a standard J bass. Fender never made a case for the JP90. They were sold new without a case or bag. I bought mine new in 1993.

Your serial is probably 1992. Mine is N013… and all stamped 1993 inside.
