Fender JP 90 club?

I think it might be a standard J-bass body. Hard to say from the pictures, the JP90 is narrowed a good bit across the bouts vs the J-bass body.

It is really easy to see it in form fit case for a standard J bass. Fender never made a case for the JP90. They were sold new without a case or bag. I bought mine new in 1993.

Your serial is probably 1992. Mine is N013… and all stamped 1993 inside.

Hmm... I bought my JP90 new in the early 90s for $399 and it came with a case.

Well, it’s here and it’s gorgeous. I wish I knew who refinished it as the store sold it on consignment and wouldn’t give owners name without their permission.

This looks to be one piece of wood unless it’s a veneer on top and bottom. I’ll open it up some time later.

No runs, drips, bubbles or any other irregularities on the clear coat that I can find.

I think @JIO and @TK4261 would appreciate this refinish job on this obscure 7ender

I’ll have to see how it fits in my 2016 American Standard Jazz Case. What should I be looking for in comparison? I thought the horns are pointier on the JP90?

Definitely not a Jazz Bass body compared to my 2016 American Standard Jazz. Wind in sails…Full sail ahead!!!

All kinds of extra room in Fender Jazz Bass case - side to side and up and down. Not at all snug like my Jazz bass

Back when I bought mine, I did ask the Fender regional sales rep, who I had known for a while. He said there was no specific case for it. Just general fit cases.

For $249 brand new, it was a steal.

I'm hoping to find out who the refinisher is. It is amazing. Not a blemish, drip, bubble, run in the clear coat. Was sold under consignment from a small retailer in Worcester, Massachusetts.

the USA made Fender JP-90.They are and were well made, fine basses but not popular because they dont look like a Jazz bass or a P bass.

Same fate as the very capable but ultimately doomed Dimension series.

Fender is a prisoner of its own legacy.

I keep my JP-90 in a purpose-bought heavy duty Carvin gig bag. After almost 30 years however, the bag and especially the zippers are starting to corrode.

What’s not to like? The JP-90 is still a pretty nice bass. Just as relevant today as in 2012. Missed your thread back when you originally posted it, but it makes me feel good knowing I’m not the only one who knew about that model. Come to think of it, you might be the only other person I know who even knows about the JP-90.

Midnight confession: much of the reason I just sold my excellent 1979 4001 (which I liked a lot) is because my trusty JP90 didn’t let the Rick get enough playtime.

The JP90 is my go-to for noodling at home.

Just went through my Fender FMIC Frontline Magazine Catalogs:

Vol. 1 Spring 1990 - this Ad is in each Vol. and then changes in Vol. 3 below

Vol. 3 Winter 1991 - this Ad changes in Vol. 4 below

Vol. 4 Spring 1991 - this Ad changes in Vol. 6 below (I don't have Vol. 5)

Vol. 6 Winter 1992 - this Ad stays the same in each subsequent Vol. up to and including Vol. 12

Vol. 9 Winter 1993 - this Ad appears with the JP-90 in Vol. 9 and then in each subsequent Vol. up to and including Vol. 11. This Ad changes in Vol. 12 shown below.

Vol. 12 Winter 1994 - Both the JP 90 and MB were included in Vol. 12 Winter 1994, but the "Fender Squier Series" is shortened to just "Fender" for the MB

Neither the JP 90 Bass nor the MB Bass appear in any of the Fender FMIC Frontline Magazine Catalogs after Vol. 12 Winter 1994

I've only included the MB Bass here as the illustrations show a similar looking instrument, but a further search on Google has shown a very different looking instrument though still a P/J. The Fender MB is also MIJ. I have not found where the Fender Squier Series MB was made.

I wonder if my good friend @JRA knows about this P/J variant?

Take a look at the hanging NAMM JP90 in that nomination pic. Does it look to anyone else as though the cutaway curves are beveled, PRS-style?

I'm wondering whether that was something they intended as a design feature and put onto the prototype they brought to NAMM, then deleted later.

Probably. Happens on quite a few other basses made by other manufacturers for NAMM shows. I've seen this happen quite a lot with Dean basses.
