Fender master built or wal bass

Wal. Why? Because its a Wal. If I ever was in a position to buy one, it would have to be without ever trying one out first. You simply cannot find one without the aid of the interwebs. We know they sound good and look fantastic. Even if I didnt care for the feel of it, I would definitely get used to it. Fenders are every where. You can walk into nearly every music store in the country and pick up a Fender. Be different.
Blinged out Caddilac or Astin Martin?
A jazz bass is a wonderful tool, that costs $1-2k reasonably, (not counting vintage prices)
A $4k+ jazz bass to me is just bling.
If I had that kind of money to spend on a bass, I would surely choose the Wal.

You might also watch basschat.co.uk for used Wals. That's how I found my Mk3.
For the money, I would hands-down recommend the Wal. I love mine! They are workhorses.

A high-end Fender will never not be a Fender. Team Wal all the way.
Here's what I don't understand - if you're spending that kinda money, how come you don't know what you want? They're so different I wonder if you're asking the right question...
I voted Wal because you don't have to spent custom shop money to get a great jazz bass, but you gotta spend Wal dollars to get a Wal...
I've had exactly one opportunity to play a 4 string wal (don't remember the model or year) a few years ago at the local boutique bass shop (bass collection in Shibuya, Tokyo). It was not my cup of tea sound or feel wise. However I can see it being more of an investment (if I forced to invest in a bass guitar at gun point) than something from the Fender custom shop. Once a Wal (or Carl Thompson sometimes) even briefly touches the Japanese internet, it's gone immediately.
I think the team built ? stuff is fine from a price / quality perspective compared to other companies that make instruments with Fender DNA. IMHO the pricing of the master built ones is not my thing

Word. If I want anything that isn't already stock on a Fender, I'm looking elsewhere.
Rush or Zeppelin might have a little to do with a jazz...but in this case, yeah, I'd go Wal, too.
^^^judging by the number of jaw dropping basses he has owned (and he is a smart, good guy/great seller) I defer....take his opinion with less salt than most
Any Wal > any jazz bass any day of the week.
If you want a fancy jazz bass, call my boy Nino Valenti and dave some money for a much better product. Better yet, if you want to get a nice jazz bass and not spend custom shop money, go Warmoth.

If I were spending Wal money for a J it wouldn't be a Fender. That said, to my taste I prefer a J, but a Wal is very much its own beast. I'd think getting to play one would give you all the info you need as to whether you'd want one over a J.
Any members live nearby that can let the man play their Wal?
