You really do have to upgrade the J pickup on the PJ, it is absolutely useless. So much so, that I only keep my PJ on the P pup and use it as a practice / backup instrument to my JMJ Mustang...

I was able to get mine sounding fairly balanced by raising up the j pup a bit. Its noticeably higher than the p but the output is good on both. And both are stock.

Odd - I've never had this trouble on any of the Mustangs I've had. (I have 2 ATM) Do you mean between the tuning mechanism and the nut? Are you sure it's not just the string?

Is it rattle from the string itself, or just some buzz elsewhere? Check the bridge springs & make sure they're not doing something weird, perhaps?

Also worth a check (& you probably know this already, but worth a look) : are you winding the E correctly on the tuner post? (i.e. top down) That type of buzz often happens on Fender type headstocks, but it's usually the A.

I added extra foam under all the pickups on mine, but I never really had any problem with my J pickup. I was able to solo it just fine without it sounding flat or dead. I guess I got the only good J pickup in mine.

Buzzing how? Also, how many wraps of the string do you have around the post? I'm assuming you meant the nut when you said saddle - I don't see one of those retainers fitting in there very well, nor should it be necessary...
