With this gig bag / HSC discussion happening, I'm just wondering: is there a problem with having room in the case above the headstock?

Not at all, so long as the instrument is secure, which it most likely would be. For me, the issue would be the added weight of a full-sized case for a short scale bass. Trying to save my back and knees as much as possible where I can, since I'm also the sound guy...

Case already came. I have three words to say about it: holy storage pockets. Love how it fits and feels when you pick it up. It doesn’t feel like a flimsy gig bag. I’ll be putting my CIJ Mustang in this and my PJ in the hard case now. I fee like my CIJ will be safer in this thing...

Glad that you're happy with it, it's the best case I've ever had. They do make one that carries two electric guitars, for $199. Made me wonder if I should have bought that instead, as I do bring a second bass to some gigs (use as backup and for alternate tuning songs in the setlist). I decided not to, as it would defeat my goal of trying to save weight:

Made me wonder if I should have bought that instead, as I do bring a second bass to some gigs (use as backup and for alternate tuning songs in the setlist). For right now, I only jam with friends so I don’t really need anything crazy. But since I paid a pretty penny for my CIJ I wanted something better than the ill fitting hard case. But yes, I am very happy with the gator case.

So I’m definitely going to get a Mustang at some point. I’ve played what I think is an 80s model and the new PJ version and loved both. Seeing the JMJ model come out now, I was wondering if anyone knows what the tonal difference is between the PJ’s P pickup and the old style JMJ one.

I cut my bass playing teeth on a Precision and I’ve owned several over the years— can’t speak about the P pickup on the PJ Mustangs firsthand but the JMJ single coil is like a hotter version of the originals (my old 70’s Mustang bass had the same style of pickups but they were nowhere near as cutting...) Seymour Duncan did a thing with the winding on the JMJ’s that is magical and very unique. Not sure if the Precision pickups in other Mustangs have had any sort of similar attention paid to them.
Playing the JMJ gets me like 90% of the way to sounding like I’m playing a P, but there’s just something else going on, it’s a lot more punchy and more “umphy”— hard to explain. It might be the stock stainless flats. Being a lifelong roundwound user, I’m surprised at how clangy and grindy the flats are sounding, minus the angled pick scratch I’m used to having.

What about comparing the CIJ Mustangs that came out a few years ago to the new JMJ? I know those pickups are also Seymour Duncan. How do they compare to the JMJ?

Can I join? My PJ gets its first gig this Saturday. Last year in a yoLo moment I treated myself to what I thought at the time would be my dream bass, a Ric 4003. I got the Stang to use half and half with the Ric, to rest my back and fingers! But having played it a couple of weeks now I’m tempted just to use the Fender. Will report back on how it goes!

Yeah since picking up a JMJ on a whim, my 4003’s been sitting in its case surprisingly more often than it used to. Glad it’s not just me this is happening to!

I do not have any experience with a Ric 4003 or a JMJ but, I do know that my Mustang PJ going through a Rumble 200 Combo is giving me the comfort and sound that I have not experienced in many, many years.

Also, I am not into the factory relic and color of the JMJ. But that is just my IMHO .

I just got this Mustang PJ off ebay. Former owner dropped it off tonight. He'd put in SD Quarter Pound pickups, and changed the tuners and bridge for black Schallers. Included the original pickups and bridge in the sale, but the stock tuners are gone. I wouldn't have gone for black hardware myself, but the bridge is growing on me. Will probably try and replace the tuners though if I can find stock ones somewhere. I don't even know what ones the PJ comes with.

Only had a bit of time tonight to play with it, but sounds great so far. I have a short scale Jaguar with Chromes on it, so might stick with the rounds on this one. Or swap them around.

Pleased to be joining the Mustang club. I've wanted one since these first came out.

I did ask why he was selling, and apparently he's doing up an old car which got way more expensive than planned, so he had to sell something. I didn't want to complain too much about the colour of the hardware as he might have decided it made more sense for him to return it to stock and sell the pickups/tuners/bridge upgrades separately. People are asking the same amount as he was for stock Mustangs.

Thing is I thought with so many people upgrading tuners there'd be loads of pre-owned stock tuners on ebay, but I can't find any, at least here in the UK. And I don't know what new ones match the originals. Are they the same as the ones on all the Mexican Standard P and J basses?

Good score - I sorta like the black hardware. Not sure if it matters at all from a sound perspective (pretty sure it doesn't) but are those P pups installed backwards? Meaning the bass side and treble side pups are reversed?

just dropping by to mention that i really like the 3 way selector if you're pedal hopping and looping. want to lay down chords? jazz pickup for the treble. want the booty-line? quickly switch to the P. It's definitely unusual for a bass but I think i honestly want it in all my future basses

Apparently he had other priorities which is why you got what he sold.

His color choices were his for whatever reason.

Some have said the stock tuners were heavy and causing neck dive. If they believed this, they probably wouldn't think there is any value in re-sale.

I haven't had a problem with mine, but I do have a thick, padded strap and don't have 3 to 4 hour gigs.

If you got a good price and you like it, that's all the really matters...rock on .

It occurred to me to compare the Schallers with the tuners on my Squier Jaguar Short Scale, and they look similar dimensions, so possibly the Squier one is the same as the stock one? The Jaguar has a black headstock, so I might even just swap them around.

Interesting about the P pickups. It seemed a bit odd to see the Seymour Duncan logo on the left for the P, when it's on the right for the J. The stock pickups were in the SD boxes, complete with wiring diagram which shows them the other way around, but doesn't say anything to suggest they have to be. They work great, so the wiring seems to be right. I'll probably swap them around at some point just so the logos line up.

I feel like this would look way better if the screws in the pickguard were also black along with the strap pegs. I also didn’t like the mint guard on my PJ so I replaced that right away.

I didn't like the mint guard either. I also didn't like the surf pearl finish. That's why I did this:
