I don't know what you fellas think, but if I get to the point of rewiring my american performer, I'd prefer to have a volume/blend/tone control layout. It may be just me, but having one control to turn the bass output on and off (or do swells!) is worth more to me than having two individual pickup volumes. Anyone done something similar to their mustang?

yea I agree. Also I'd like to make sure that the level coming out of the guitar is consistently the same regardless of how the two picks are mixed in. I feel like right now there is a difference in level between one solo'd pickup and both pickups on full, for example.

Normally I'd agree, but on the am performer I find the mustang and jazz pups work best separately and I dont want any bleed from the blend knob. Do you mix the two often?

This AmPerf Mustang's head pic is from Fender's site. I believe it's the same tuning machine as the one I weighed. Mine was from a Jazz build. My list of weights are a mix of manufacturers specs (Hipshot (USA only)) and my Fender measured weights. Grain of salt, always.

I don't have an American Performer, but in general I agree with Mr. Eggo. I almost never blend the pickups on my various PJs. I like separate knobs to set basically for unity gain switching between the two, maybe a little bump on the Jazz. That said though, I use HC Jazz pickups on PJs. I don't do many swells. On my seldom used Jazz bass, I generally run both singles dimed. I also use a volume pedal to keep up with the guitar dude and outflank the soundman.

So the question I have about these hipshots..then is it necessary to have different holes then the factory holes with some empty holes showing while using hipshots? None of them are built to directly install into existing factory holes?

With the ultralights, that is the problem. The weight saving design only uses one attachment/positioning screw. I was ready to take the plunge, but my desired set was back-ordered. I've since changed my mind.

S'not a problem if you just fill in the holes with a dab of plastic wood...
Here's my Mustang, before and after, with Ultralights installed:

While you can see the slight patch spots where the holes are filled in this closeup photo, in real life in normal light they're invisible unless you stick your nose on the head...

No. ~~~ME!! I mean, why would you buy a bass that cost's more because of a good wood grain? Or maybe even pay a bit more to get it in the color you like? -Who are you trying to please anyway? -Think about it...
Also I forget now the weight saved on the Mustang with the Ultralights... I think it may have been close to 1/2 lb.? -But any weight taken offa the tip of a bass's neck is good in my book! {~Plus Hipshot tuners tune up quicker and easier and then hold the tuning better than your usual stockers...}

If I went the weight saving route and was bothered by the holes, I’d probably get a matte black vinyl sticker (or another color to my liking), cut it out the shape of the back of the headstock, and apply it before installing the tuners.

OK, but you have to be careful and accurate with drilling the new single hole for the Ultralight's screw. You don't want it too close to the shaft opening else it might 'chip in'. So I'd rather not have something covering the headstock and making my view less accurate....

That’s a great point/issue. I’d drill it before applying the sticker, then apply the sticker and “find” the pre drilled holes with a pin or exacto knife. It is what I do with applying drum wraps after the shells are drilled.

That’s not to say I don’t think what you did is equally acceptable.

I'm probably the odd man out, but I love the middle position on my MIM Mustang PJ.

Not the odd man out Dr. M. I don't have stock pickups in mine, but I normally use the middle position with the bridge pickup tone dialed back a bit. I have VTVT controls, though.

Aged natural with Pau Ferro looks so nice, and plays SO much better than my early '90s Falcon precision copy!

I'm loving the pickup selector and the J pickup especially since I've not played anything but p-bass pickups before.

Relearning after a 25 year hiatus so my older arms and shoulders appreciate the short-scale neck. Sounds so fatter too.

Very happy to claim my ticket to the Mustang Club
