I agree the Squier VC is a very well made, beautiful baass. I compared the early Squier VC Mustang I owned for about a month with my Fender Mustang LE PJ and I found the Squier sounded somewhat weak compared to the P pickup of the PJ. Adjusting the pickup height and turning the amp up for the Squier and EQ didn't improve things much. I went to return the Squier and found the shop had a minty very lightly used first version Mustang PJ with the rosewood fingerboard and it too sounded noticeably better than the Squier so I returned the Squier and bought the PJ for a bit more than I paid for the Squier.

Your description of the tone of your Squiier makes me wonder if the pickup I had was defective or if they improved them.

I thought I had a defective pup as well but that tiny adjustment made a world of difference. It has become my number 1

Good that it worked for you. None of the adjustments I tried made mine sound better. Different, yes, but it just didn't have enough oomph (technical term) for me and sounded thin. I forgot to say I also compared my Squier to my MIJ Mustang bass with similar results.

Have any of yall tried the aftermarket mustang mini-splits? I'm wondering how some -- like Lollar, frailin, or Nordstarnd -- compare to JMJ or similar. I've watched a Phillip Conrad video where he uses the Novak's, which sound great. Just wondering about the other brands.

Did not tried aftermarket ones, but one thing, about "JMJ or similar". JMJ has Seymour Duncan custom shop ones - so they are not like "stock" ones in Vintera or Japan mustangs.

Thanks that’s very kind. A couple of horrible mistakes there but I’m glad you like the general sound. The strings are Elixir (the only rounds I use). I usually have 40-95 on my long scales; I think these are 45-100 or whatever the standard gauge are.
