Please let us all know how you feel about the Squire vs the Fender after you've had some time with both of them!
Ok, so two weeks of recovery and playing bass here’s my report:
Squire CV60s Mustang: fit, finish, fret work is exceptional. The fretwork is on par with my Fender CS 60s Jazz bass. The neck has a gorgeous tint and the finish isn’t sticky. It truly feels well worn.
Setup: the only issue was the E string side of the pup needed a slight adjustment upwards and there was perfect balance across all strings. The string height and intonation are spot on!
Controls: volume taper is incredibly responsive, easy to roll the volume up to the perfect level.
Tone taper is really great, easy to roll up the right amount of tone.
Sound: pure old school 60s Mustang tone. I was able to dial in Bill Wyman tones.
I was even able to get 90% there on Justin Meldal Johnsen tone.
When you dig in, it really shows its own unique voice.
Weight: mine came in at a paltry 7 lbs 6 oz.
Overall: this bass is a killer instrument which I will be proud to debut on my next gig on May 27th.
Fender Player Mustang PJ:
Fit, finish and fret work are great. The Firemist gold looks fantastic under stage lights. I did swap out the pickguard for a Tort pick guard and it really made the color pop!
The neck: nice satin finish on the back smooth and fast. The Pau Farro finger board was dry and needed some oil. Once oiled it looks fantastic!
Pups: the P-Bass split coil is really loud, deep and responsive. The Jazz pup is ok. Not the best not the worst, but paired with this P-bass pup it works.
Controls: not bad, but the Squier’s are much more responsive.
Sound: Not quite a P or J or Mustang, but close enough.
Weight: 8lbs 12oz…hefty!
Overall: great fun bass which is easy to play, sounds great and is a great value!
The winner: The Squier is IMO the better bass in every category. It’s got the old school vibe and tone which really shine through.
