What size ultralites or Gotohs will work as lightweight replacements for MIJ/CIJ basses? It looks like 3/8" and GB350/GB528s would work based on my searches, but I checked the thread and didn't find anything definitive. Thanks.

All three Squier Mustangs. The white one is ready: Nordstrand pu, new wiring and electronics, mint pick guard and LaBella flats.
The other two are up for some modding:
The sunburst one with also a Nordstrand pu, new wiring and electronics, aged perloid pick guard and DR Hi-beams round wounds.
The green one I will probably paint Dakota red, put in a gold foil pu, new wiring and an aged perloid pick guard. I'm not sure about strings yet.

I'm contemplating exchanging the necks of the green and sunburst one.

Vintage mustang bass spec question: what body wood/s were used? I recently refinished a 1969/1970 body that appears to be poplar. I understand some may have been Ash and some Alder. Is there any definitive answer for this? I had originally thought all vintage mustangs were Alder, until they did some natural finish ones in the mid-late 70s with Ash. Seems that assumption was wrong.

It seems that nobody is interested in purchasing my Squier CV Mustang modded with a Serek LZ B90… so I’m thinking of removing the Serek pup, restoring the Stang and selling them separately.

Any idea of the best and least expensive places to score a pickguard for use with the original pup?

Stock, my MIM PJ Mustang wiring left much to be desired. I have no problem with the factory switch functionality, but the Jack felt loose and made poor contact with my cables. So, I installed a Switchcraft jack.

With the control plate open, I noticed that the pots were full size but metric, Asian imports. The pickup output from the switch was connected to the center wiper of the volume pot. Instead of going to the top of the volume pot. The connection to the output jack is attached to the top of the volume pot.

I replaced both pots with CTS 250K pots and wired the output from the switch to the top of the volume pot. The tone control is wired to the wiper of the volume pot, ala 50’s wiring and the .1 ufd tone cap is replaced with a metal film of the same value. Opening the pot holes on the control plate to 3/8” to mount the new pots was a PITA. That chrome plated steel is tough!

The bass now has lots more clarity and top end with all controls wide open. The results are very nice.

The pickup output from the switch was connected to the center wiper of the volume pot. Instead of going to the top of the volume pot. The connection to the output jack is attached to the top of the volume pot.

That's similar to the volume pot wiring used in the Jazz bass.
