For my 50th birthday a number of years ago I had the honor to sit with Dunn and Steve Cropper for 30 mins as Dunn's cousin was in the unit I was in charge of. He set it up as a B-day present as they were stopping by to visit him anyway and he knew what a fan I was. During our 30 mins one of the subjects brought up was Albert King. Now I am aware that Born Under A Bad Sign was credited to William Bell and Booker T Jones as the writers. But according to those two the music was written by them. Not bad for two non delta boys. This is not completely verified but since it came outta their mouths I will take it on faith.
So, needless to say, Donald "Duck" Dunn is one of my Bass Heroes!
Enjoy that book, because I know you will.

NBD! I found a lightly used CME Special Edition Mustang bass with the one-piece maple neck and pulled the trigger without hesitation. A couple minor scratches on the front and back. Barely noticeable. Neck/headstock is mint. Pickguard has a wide area of surface abrasions that I think could be buffed out. Previous owner was either a slap-happy slapper or a pick strumming fiend.
Raised the string height slightly on the bass side and checked the intonation. She's good to go! Plugged her in... she plays smooth and sounds amazing. Not a super fan of the PJ setup but I will say it has a very lively tone with the factory strings. Interested to hear what it would do with flatwounds. I prefer a more vintage tone with a little bite in the mids. I'm thinking the PJ just might be able to pull it off with the right strings and settings. Anywho, just excited to have another one-piece maple neck Mustang in the herd!

Hi all just returned from our nations fair capitol. Long and boring filled with to many self important people to full of themselves, and these were friends! But on the whole it was a complete success. It looks like the charity has the green light to display the "US Navy Supports This" logo. That is all I will say about that. Oh not to mention being able to see the wickedest 4' 11" bass player throw her Precision around like it's balsa wood. How does she do that?!
Well it's great to be back among the "normal" again.

This is the second CME Mustang PJ I have seen. Uniue coloring on the neck and headstock. I am sure that is the Maple. It is not, well lemme put it this way I like it! How does it feel and play? One other question. Does CME do these conversions or have they been done by the previous owner. It is something I would never have considered. But it sure is handsome.

A 4'11" bass player with a Precision??? Wonder why she wouldn't be using a short scale. She must be a real bomber of a player. Wish you'd gotten a pic of that!!
I think the coloring on the CME PJ headstock and neck in the pic are from the LED "flourescent" light fixtures in my workshop. The maple is more neutral in natural lighting. The neck is perfectly straight and the action is set pretty low. It plays super smooth with no fret buzzing - at least with the factory round-wound strings. This one plays the best of all my Mustang basses. The 2013 Pawn Shop/Biosonic and '78 natural play almost as well.
I'm not sure, but I think CME has these made up special from Fender, just for their store. I messaged them on Reverb last week about how much longer they were going to offer these and, so far, haven't received a response. There are currently a couple used ones on eBay and Reverb, I think, but they're asking more than a new one. I don't see how they figure it's worth more. Go figger. I sure wish Fender would offer one-piece maple necks for the Mustang Bass through their store. That would be so awesome!

First, I guess if Jeff Beck hires her she must have sumpin pretty special. I just remember my '72 Precision being pretty much a Sequoia with strings. Extremely heavy. She was pretty special at the club the other evening. The other 3 weren't bad themselves.
Thank for the desciption on the CME. There is one up for sale here by a private party and now I think I may take a look at it. This helps.
Finally I have been playing the string game with flat wounds on my MIM PJ for the last couple of months. From LaBella's to Dunlop's to DR's and even a set of coated Brass. IMHO they seemed a bit to deep. Almost muddy. I just installed a set of D'Adarrio Chrome Flats medium scale and so far (1 week) I am quite pleased with them. Just a bit brighter than the others and pleasantly flexible without being sloppy. The main issues with the others was the silk wrappings. With my RA and tremor I wasn't able to trim the silk properly and in all sets the silk would overlap the nut, saddle, or both. Even the D'Adarrio Shot Scales had the prolem with silk. But these Mediums work just fine and I feel sound great. I hope that helps a bit. I fully understand that string choice is subjective and I respect that.

Now I know who you're talking about. Seen her on a couple YouTube videos I stumbled upon recently. Tal Wilkenfeld. Watching her now, playing at the Crossroads Festival in 2007 playing an all natural Jazz. She's ripping it up!
Definitely gonna try the Chromes. I hear lots of Mustang player raving about them.

What, you don't like the cute, little stock bridge on the PJ? Why not go for the string-through American Standard Big Block High Mass Vintage Chrome Bass Bridge. Just a few (4) holes in the body and a set of string ferrules will increase your sustain, mojo, tone and self-esteem exponentially for only a couple more dollars. Don't be shy. Available now on eBay while quantities last. I just bought two, so you'd better get to it!
Not my thing. I play flats exclusively, and they don't generally like string through I've assembled my share of basses and the Fender high mass(or Badass II which its modeled after) is the one I like!

I was just looking at that myself. I think that for the PJ, with the Jazz Bass pickup installed where Fender put it, the standard Mustang Bass bridge won't fit. At least it doesn't look like it. There are other bridges which should fit the PJ, if that's a deal breaker. I like the stock PJ bridge. The only change I'm thinking of is modding mine so that I can make it string-through, like my American Precision was.
