Fender or lakland?

Well, that is a passive bass with a totally different pickup configuration than the Jazz Deluxe. Neither could be considered the "best", they are both fine instruments.

We can't make this decision for you. I'll say it again: You need to try these basses for yourself to see if you like them. We cannot tell you which is best or which will work best in your situation. YOU HAVE TO TRY THEM FOR YOURSELF.

When I was buying my current bass I played US Jazz Deluxe 5 and loved it. It was very similar to the MIM Jazz Deluxe V I had and loved at the time. The big difference was that the US model weighed about 5 pounds less than my MIM, plus I liked the noiseless pickups the new US model had and the build quality was a bit nicer than mine.

I had seen so many people rave about the 55-02 but couldn't find a dealer nearby (I've since found one) and was unsure about buying one. But I finally broke down and decided to give it a try based on the overwhelmingly positives reviews. It took me longer than I expected to get used to the increased scale length but in the end I was extremely happy with it.

I'd love to someday A/B the two, or A/B my 55-02 against a Stingray 5 SH.

Thats a good thing to point out. Its also something I do admire about Fender. When you purchase their more expensive instruments, the provide you with a case. That actually helped sway my opinion when I bought my Jazz Deluxe 5 a few years back.

Another thing that Id like to mention about Fender, that Im not sure the 55-02 series offers or not is Fender gives you the option of Alder or Ash body, and Maple or Rosewood fingerboards. (at least they did when I bought mine, that couldve changed now, I honestly do not know)

I believe the 55-02 bodies are ash, at least that's what I remember from the last time I looked at Lakland's web site. You do get a choice of fingerboard, though.

As far as whether or not a hard case comes with the bass, I don't see that as being relevant. Instead, look at what your net cost is getting each with a case. I paid about $1150 for my 55-02 plus another $80 or so for the Lakland hard case. My net cost was about $1230, give or take a few bucks since I'm going from memory a year and a half after buying it. Then I just checked Musician's Friend's web site and a US Jazz Deluxe V goes for $1249, Fender hard case included.

Conclusion? You'll pay basically the same amount for either bass with the "matching" hard case. Having played both, I can't say either would be a bad decision. :)

Now you're talking like a true GAS-aholic! :D

If you find a MIM with good build quality you'll have a great instrument for the price. Until about 6 months ago I had a MIM that I loved - a Jazz Deluxe V.

I've never played a 55-01 but from what I remember reading it's a different sounding bass than the 55-02. The pickups and preamp it uses apparently give it a more aggressive sound than you get from a 55-02 (at least a 55-02 with the typical Bartolini preamp/pickup combination).

Buying both of these new would probably cost you a little more than buying either a USA Jazz Deluxe or a 55-02, but if you buy one or both used the total cost would be in the same ballpark or even less. Interesting idea.

well I got to play a 5 string American Deluxe at GC that had a great setup ( if you can believe that :eek: ) and the B string had a HUGE ! timberal to it and the bass overall was killer so .... I bought it..... :D

well I got to play a 5 string American Deluxe at GC that had a great setup ( if you can believe that :eek: ) and the B string had a HUGE ! timberal to it and the bass overall was killer so .... I bought it..... :D

But I love it. I'd get another one. I also like Fender as much. Just depends on what style you're playing. So get one of each eventually! You can never have enough basses.
