Anyone have a lead on a pre cbs P, preferably body refin only? Are there any reputable dealers on the west coast as well? Thanks!
There is a gentleman down in louisiana, who has a wonderful nineteen sixty body, only refinished for sale
I just purchased a 1959 from him and for me. It was almost a corn toss as to whether to buy the 60 or the 59, but since the 59 is a birth year. That sort of settled it for me.

I was looking at the Invalid Link Removed and noticed it's made of ash (So is theirInvalid Link Removed) I was under the impression all 60s three tone sunburst guitars were alder? Did Fender really do 3-tone sunburst with ash in the early 60s?
Is it typical for ‘59/‘60 basses to be missing neck date stamp?
Also, are sub 8 lb precisions at all common?

Neck date stamps weren't used until sometime in 1962 before that it would have been a pencil date
Between the latter half of 1959 well into 1960 it was not uncommon for there not to be a date
A sub 8 lb bass is a real treasure if you can find one
I have seen a couple for example my bass dated 5 of 59 is about 7.3 lb I think so they are definitely out there

59 is a year for no neck stamp. It’s been said (but not proven) someone penciled something inappropriate on a neck and for half a year or so there were no stamps/markings in 59. Resumed penciling in 1960 with stamps making their debut in 62 give or take.
Once again, Fender kinda does whatever they want and call it something that never was.
I spy… with my little eye… a 1963 P bass en route to my front door. Pics coming hopefully this week or next week
How do people think about basses that were assembled entirely from period correct pre cbs parts? Does the overall value take a hit? I know Frankenstein basses that splice parts from different eras are not desirable, but what is the overall perception of an entirely "pre cbs Frankenstein?"

Kidding. Oct 63 P bass. Nice little birthday present to myself. Put some labella dtf on it and it sings. The truss rod is like barely being used, woohoo! Perfect relief with decades left of life. This is my first “all original” pre cbs bass. I’ve had an all original 65 Jazz but alas 64 is the cutoff year. It’s quieter than a lot of my basses which is interesting but hey I’ll look for any excuse to crank the ole trusty gain knob lol.
Right now I’m putting the bass through my tone hammer di. Playing some classic P bass stuff, Jamerson, Sabbath, John Mayer Trio, etc.

Also, some dbag carved “funk machine” on the back.
I was able to pick this 1960 P up semi locally and was able to spend some time with it before I bought it. Pretty excellent instrument, not feather light at 8.75 lbs but light enough, balances well, and sounds amazing.
What is the optimal weight for an early 60's P?

Nice!! With olinto flats as well! I had a skab board P (same year as yours) and they truly are magical. Rather thin necks as well.
I tried a few different sets of flats I had laying around and ended up with the dtf 760fs, they are just so much fatter and more organic sounding to me than the olinto signature strings. I did order some 760fl to try out as well.
I was actually hoping to land a 59 or 60 with a little bit narrower nut, closer to 1.69, alas this one is 1.74. I think I'll just have to keep waiting until the right bass comes and enjoy this one in the meantime. Tonewise it's kind of mind blowing, sounds so much better to me than the other boutique pbasses I've played, Moollon, olinto, and fender CS. Hippie refin ftw.
