Love it, I'm curious about the mutes too as I also thought the mutes ended in late 62.

Maybe the body was from 62 & already pre-drilled so Fender used the mutes until they used up the bodies with pre-drilled holes????

What's the pot dates on it?

Either way, I LOVE that white.

A related piece of info from page 35 of 'The Fender Bass' states that "when the complex individual mute system was removed, the external brass ground wire was also replaced". So I am thinking that perhaps the decision was made by Leo to discontinue the string mutes and external ground wire at the end of 1962, but remaining inventory was used up into mid 63. Would love to hear from other 1963 owners on this topic.

1SHOT1HIT, my pots date to the 20th week of 1963 and I have an early 'L' neck plate (L02XXX).

Like pretty much all the changes that Fender made, they were never immediate and there was always a a little overlap because they would never throw out the older parts. They would use them up while phasing in the new stuff. When they started doing no mutes and running the ground wire under the bridge, my guess is.. they probably still had a stack of bodies that didn't have the tunnels for the ground wires drilled in them like the new bodies, so they completed those with the older ground strip and mutes. John Paul Jones' Jazz is just like Ron's - VVT with mutes and ground strip. I think JPJ's is an early '63 as well (or maybe late '62).

Luthier is just an hour and a half drive away. He builds lovely instruments. He is in awe of my old jazz. He's from Moscow and has only been in Canada 8 years and hasn't seen many basses this old out here on the prairie. He plays guitar but particularly loves bass and stick.

Well, either way, personally I think he scored!

I don't use my mutes, but there's something cool about knowing they're their if I decide to put em back on it.
I also like the way it looks with the four screws there between the bridge and rear pup.
