Not all,I have a neck date May 65 with a clay dot fingerboard and no binding,it's posted way back in this thread somewhere. Bought it used from original owner in '69 .

Agree :thumbsup: My March 65 neck stamp with clay dots and no binding. I also have a Feb 66 neck stamp with pearloid and neck binding, but I’ve never seen either on a ‘65.

Greetings all, I’ve got a question about pre-cbs P Bass knobs and figured you guys might be the ones to help me out. I have a late 62/early 63 with what I think are original flat top knobs. Recently I bought an early/mid 63 spaghetti logo L series and the knob that is supposedly original is slightly curved on top. Do you know what would be correct for either of these basses? From what I can tell, it looks like 57-62 were flat top then they got slightly curved when the L Series started. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good call. First picture is the flat top knobs on my pre L series bass which I believe to be original. Second picture shows the slightly curved knob, which is claimed as original by the seller, on the left and a single flat top I purchased that is either 60s or 70s.

The knurled knobs on my ‘59 and ‘69 look the same to me (photos attached). Both basses are supposed to be all original, but who really knows after all these years. I hope someone has a definitive answer.

After referencing Terry Foster’s Fender book, it seems that those are correct on yours. The flat top knobs were CBS era so looks like I’ve got 70s knobs on one of mine which makes sense because the pots were replaced as well.

One more thing I meant to ask earlier. I know fender used a .1 uf paper cap in the late 50s basses and then switched over to a .05 uf ceramic disc around 61 or 62. This original wiring harness from late 63 looks to have a .1 ceramic disc which I believe were used in strays of that era. Have you guys ever seen this on a P bass before? I’m wondering if they just kept the caps in a bucket and one got mixed in.

Nothing 'stray' about this one - it's standard on a late '63 Precision. The .05 disc was used on Jazz Basses from 1961, on the Precisions it was the orange .1 disc (as in your pic) which remained into 1964 before the mustard coloured disc stamped [+80-20 .05 50V] took over.

Cool, thanks. Now I’m wondering if it’s worth replacing the NOS .05 cap in my other bass for a .1 :roflmao:
