Fender pre-CBS Club: pics mandatory!

But wern’t the clay dots made from a type of putty or something that was pressed into the indentations of the neck and left to dry so there would not have been any dots laying around somewhere, hasn’t the floor tile source been debunked, maybe they had some of that putty left over and wanted to use it up.

My understanding has been that they were made from a type of fiberboard similar to what the pickup bobbins were made out of (though different color) - but I wasn't there so don't know 100%... If it was a putty I would think they would have deteriorated by now but that's speculation on my part.

But, yes, most likely leftovers, whatever they were!

I'm planning to put my 62 LPB on the market next year, once I restore the bridge and tuning keys to stock. But after having it appraised (that sucker's worth as much as a new car!), it seems to be too valuable to transact remotely. I mean, no buyer is going to send that much money based only on pictures, and no seller wants to ship it until the check has cleared the bank. Right?

I assume the right way is to consign through a reputable dealer. If I'm mistaken, please let me know.

It's a real consideration with them being worth so much now. I've had good luck doing what you mention and selling on consignment with reputable dealers/shops (stress "reputable") and when the values are higher like this, the commission rate is sometimes negotiable - I'd look for 20% or less. That can sound like a lot but I've found it worth it as they've often been able to get better prices than I would have so the net is better regardless. Plus, huge peace of mind having them as a buffer between any scams, etc.
The last more expensive bass I sold directly to someone I didn't already know, we met at a tech's shop by prior arrangement - the nervousness can go both ways as the buyer had a lot of cash on hand for the deal. Plus the instrument could be safely inspected (don't really want to start taking one apart in the back of a car...) and played through an amp and thoroughly checked out to his satisfaction. Paid the tech a nominal fee and was well worth it - far better than meeting in a liquor store parking lot.

Not that I care all that much but I was given #62, which happened to be available when I purchased my ‘62 Jazz in 2014. I do recall (and with some research can find, tho I’m feeling a bit lazy at the moment) that there was some confusion at the time. Mebbe give me #62-A or something...

Still have that Jazz—will always have it—but rarely play it. Kinda like one of Nigel Tufnel’s instruments: “Don’t touch it.” (I was pointing at it.) “Well, don’t point.”

Whoops! Sorry about that, I'll make it so. Edit: Looks like 62-A is the cleanest fix.
