Fender pre-CBS Club: pics mandatory!

Thank you!! The 62 is August IIRC (not been taken apart for 20 years, just after I bought it), so has the curved board, but still the individual mutes and VVT controls (stack knobs ends I 1961). Very light and easy to play, it had been extensively toured with Jeff Beck. Not by me.



1964 I have had only about 4 years. Heavily worn but, light and very bright sounding. Previous ownership was 20 years. Absolutely filthy when I first acquired it, I have still not managed to clean it fully, but it is not the health hazard it once was.


1965 CAR. Again a lovely sounding and comfortable bass Although heavier than the others, owned for circa 10 years, it was a pleasant surprise to learn that a member here - corresponding on another forum- had been a former custodian since the mid 90s. Hello Dynacord! Unusually this bass has gold and silver layers under the red on the body and silver only under the headstock finish.




I had another 62, recently sold on, which had been modified with a maple slab board, completely refinished, changed guard and pickups. I had a new fretless unlined Brazilian board added, but I never bonded with it so I put the funds towards a 65 Strat.

Do I get a number?

See, because Fender pretty incorrectly did their reissue stack knob and called it a "62", makes everyone think that real 1962 production were stack knobs, but its incorrect.
The stack knobs were 60 and by late 61 the 3-knob was phased in. So far only one person among these several bass boards has come up with a 62 dated stacker.

Seeing as how I popped my head up about Dakota red, it made sense to share a pic - with apologies for the phone photo: a ‘61 Dakota red P - yes, it’s a refin, but the color was carefully cribbed from the neck pocket; a ‘63 J that I’ve played since ‘73, pretty much original (I should show you the back!); and a 1980 G&L L1000 - yes, I know it’s the odd one out here, but as the 897th bass made by G&L (according to Paul Bechtold), I couldn’t really ask it to leave the table :).

I'd think more likely they found some of the old dots and used them up in '65. The date stamp was done at the beginning of the build process (before the truss rod and fingerboard were installed, headstock planed, frets installed, neck profiled and then finished). Many people assume it was a completion date but that's mistaken.

Like my ‘59 with a neck plate that indicates ‘58 according to Fender. Probably bottom of a bin that was refilled before emptying.

Yes, by all accounts the neck plates were tossed salad and the number ranges are just general guidelines.

Related but different, I've mentioned before I had a set of original factory gold hardware (very, very rare on the basses) from a '61 3 knob Jazz Bass and the neck plate number was in the '58-'59 range (which makes sense as one would suppose that these were done in batches and used as they got orders for them) and, similarly, the bridge still had the '59 and earlier type bridge plate (they were not going to let a gold plated one go to waste even if it didn't really fit...
