Fender Precision-Bird?

I did the bridge pickup so the the neck coil was where the J pickup was. I did the neck pickup so that the bridge coil was where the J pickup was. Were I doing it again, I would do it the other way and have the front coil of the front pickup sit where the J was. That would be pretty close to Precision pickup placement.

I've toyed with the idea of cutting a new guard so I can shift the pickup back a little. It sounds good as is; I just wonder if it would sound better.
Not a Fender with Thunderbird pickups but your description of the pickup placement on your bass called to mind the pickups in my fretted Martin Keith Elfin 5. Martin placed the Citron humbuckers so that the outer coils match '60s Jazz Bass pickup positions with the two inner coils closer together which produces a very nice, meaty tone when I pan to those coils. The pan control on the bass can be switched between a normal pan control that goes from one humbucker to the other, or with a pul switch on the tone control the pan control them pans between the outer coils to all four with the control in the middle to both inner coils. This is a very cool feature as the pickups stay in humbucking mode throughout.

Still love that black 'n tort P'Nobird. A P-bass with a '60s reproduction T-bird pickup is about as close to perfect as it gets for me and my tastes. The tone suits me far better than any traditional split-coil pickup.
Thanks...I think it's something pretty special, too!

@BeeTL where do I get a pickguard for a Thunderbird pickup P?

I have a spare "60s Thunderbird pickup" by a german pickup maker I want to fit in my MIM LPB pinstripe P :-D
I have my pickguards made by WD Music here in Florida...they have an OEM/Builder program that's tough to beat.

My Chimera Series Primaluxe builds use an imported swamp ash P body, so my pickguards are not "F" Standard, at least not MIM.

If you can find your pickguard template on the WD site, they can make it with a 'Bird pickup rout.

Thanks!

Here's my take. 'Slab' body with belly and forearm cut. stack pots, contoured heel. Dakota Red in Fenderspeak, Cardinal Red in Gibson.

Weighs 8 lbs. Under the bridge pup cover there's a hot single coil Jazz pickup. Neck is a ThunderBucker 63 spec.

I bought a set of Lull Tbird pups a few weeks ago here. I've always loved Vintage White with Tort guard and a Rosewood neck. I had my buddy JohnK put it together for me. He did a fantastic job, I love thing baby.
