Fender Precision leave it as is or road worn it

I'm with the general consensus here. If you're going to sell it, then leave it alone. It's not worth the time and aggro only to limit the market for it further.
If you keep it and want a relic then go for it.

I don't mean to be rude or offensive in any way, but I think the real reason this bass isn't getting the attention you hoped is it's simply priced to high. Personally, I think that bass should be about 200-250 less than what you have it priced at on here for most people to be interested. Sucks, but that's just the way of parts basses. If you have it priced differently locally, ignore what I said.

Im voting road worn but only do the back of the neck for playability. Just go gig it if you eant the body wear

I have been refinishing basses for over 25 years. I know I can do the job correctly. The question is do I.

I have owned many old Fenders as well and studied the way they wear. Some who relic a bass just start banging and sanding away without thinking it through as to where the wear would come from and how much wear. I would never do it to a polyurethane finish, but a nitro, tempting, especially if I do not sell it. I am giving it until Friday. Friday it will either be sold, traded, or road worn. But I could always change my mind.

Now that artificial relic's have been around for many years, I think the uniqueness of the finish has lost its appeal to most folks these days. I'm speaking about the mid to heavy relics. If I were in your situation, with your skill set, I would refinish it in a really sweet color that we don't often see, and if you must, give it just the slightest relic job. That would make it stand out from most others, it would be a fun project, and who knows-- you might even like it enough to keep it.

Guys I have owned this bass for several years now. I am thinking about giving it a "road worn" look. The paint is nitro and the body is from a 2009 Hwy 1.

Just curious what you guys think. I have it for sell, but not getting the interest I was hoping. Reliced basses seem to get more attention locally. Personally, I do not like the relic basses except for the Road Worn basses Fender puts out. View attachment 782301 View attachment 782309

I'd have to agree. I'd think $100-200 off the asking price should move it.

Not that it matters one bit, but I'd vote to NOT relic it. It's a pretty bass, as is.

Offer me $750 and it's yours. TB Classifieds always has stuff priced reasonable but TB'ers want a "blue light special" that's why the classifieds are full of the same old stuff that has a load of bumps

If personaly you don't like it (as you stated) & think you mite change your mind on selling it & come to your sences decide on keeping it ! then Hell NO! Thats one gorgeous instrument!!

But if you're absolutely sure you want to sell it & it's a popular thing in your area with a guaranteed buyer , Then Hell yeah!

Relicing your sweet ax is like speaking with a fake accent, fun for awhile, but nobody thinks it's as clever as the person doing it, plus when you do it for long enough, you end up with an identity crisis.

I'd absolutely leave it as-is, it's more valuable this way. And I'd find the more-correct neck plate for it.

I'd also lower the price.

I was only able to get your asking ($850 so others don't have to look) for a mint & stock '83 USA P w/ ohsc late last year after trying for a couple months to get $1050, then $950. If I were looking for this bass now, I'd only shell out about $500. Parts + Barts (even though I like 'em, they detract from resale value).

This is just me, of course. Full disclosure, I'm terminally cheap, and yes, you could get more from someone less cheap, but you ain't getting $850 for this. Maybe $650 -$700 tops. I could be wrong, and actually hope I am.

Agreed - I think most desirable Road Worns were done at the factory, not by an owner (at least not just to make it look like a relic). They do sell when it's natural wear, but I think that's more because of their age than the wear itself /shrug

A "reasonable price" is just the interface between how badly you want to sell it and how badly someone wants to buy it. Free markets are fickle and the economy is sketchy, so in the end you can only sell it for what someone will pay.

Are you sure it's nitro cellulite? I've never seen a bass with cellulite!

Don't be afraid to make your bass into what you want it to be. Can always refinish it in the future.

Never understood the "road worn" look as a finish, i believe that wear and tear on an instrument should come from use and be personal to the owner.....i know the history being my bass's wear and tear and it makes me smile when i remember the how and where of how it happened.

But if you like the "Road Worn" look, here is a picture of my Range Rover, now a new one will set you back £65'000 but as mine has a road worn look, i will let it go for £100'000.....that seems to be the way of these things, the rougher it looks the more it costs.

Leave the body, neck as it is, put some rusty old fender pickups in there and market it as a "light relic". It'll sell in an instant.
