Fender Precision New vs. Used

Don't dismiss the 1997 - 2005 MIA Fenders. There are some great deals to be had.
One of my all-time favorite Jazz Basses was a 2000 model. Paid $550 in mint condition. Had a sweet 1998 Precision that was around $500 as well.

Any posts/theads/sites that you can suggest that would have this kind of information?

if you're serious, I'd recommend this book.

it's only like $15. And STILL a sweet book even if you decide not to go the vintage route. I had a copy for years before I bought my first vintage Fender.

But it will tell you how to identify originality in vintage Fender basses down to the screws that hold the tuners on.

FWIW, the vintage 70s P bass will likely hold its value and even appreciate, whereas the new one will immediately begin depreciating as soon as you walk out of the store.

So from a purely financial perspective, if the prices are in the same ballpark and you find a 70s P bass you like, I'd go with that one.

Good luck!

There again, if you buy a new one and keep it 30 years ....

+1 recently got a '04-ish P from a TB'r w/ a rare color. popped some Fralins in and it's my main player now ...

as others have said - Fender's quality has always ranged. some good, some bad. go play! (or make sure you can return...)

I'll tell you what, go check out the Fender 50's precision. It's MIM but the new ones are just fantastic and the build quality is excellent. First Fender I've actually wanted to own and play in the last 15 years.

Just bought one of these as well. My first new Fender. The neck is comparable to my '57 AV RI's. Really nice bass at 1/2 the price of the MIA Standard and a 1/3 of the AV's.
Not sure how it will hold up value-wise but I am not a collector (assuming that having a collection does not make me one!) LOL.

I own 70's Fenders as well as 2008+ MIA Fenders.

I love my 70's Fenders, but I played dozens to find the 3 that work for me. VERY hit or miss with these.

My new Fenders are amazing. Sound, feel, fit/finish, etc. I would recommend a 2008 or newer Fender as it is pretty tough to get a lemon IMO/IME.

my 2005 MIA P bass rivals anything that I have felt or heard on the newer basses 2008+. I love the pickup sound, i love the neck, comfort level is A+. I have played so many 08+ fenders and I really do not see the reason for steering clear from the 2001-2007 basses. Basically the same exact thing with an s-1 witch. plus the tuners look too small to me on the newbies.
