It's been 5 days with the Rumble 500 combo, so I thought I would post some of my impressions and perhaps pose a few questions...
1. This thing is powerful. I have read the threads about how Fender is conservative with ratings. I agree. The 350 watts this is putting out into the internal 8 ohm load sounds and feels more like 500 or 600. I am going to engage in some unfounded speculation and say it is more powerful than one of those "1,000 WATT!" Bugera Combos I have seen advertised...(based solely on my own distasteful experiences with their products in the past. Don't ask.)
2. This thing is warm-sounding. ("Baked-in sound" yadda yadda. Don't care. It sounds great.)
3. The EQ is well-voiced and versatile.
4. The Vintage button is good. (See No. 2 above.)
5. This thing is powerful. I do not foresee ever having to add a cab (not to say I won't some day add a cab, just saying I won't need to...)
6. It plays well with budget equipment. My sole bass at this point is a Peavey Grind 4 NTB that I picked up for an great price after a period of having no basses at all (shameful, I know). It has many good qualities, but pickups and wiring are not among them. I need to get it re-wired, but I cannot bear not to have it for the day it will take my great local tech to do it. Sounds great through this amp.
7. The horn is not really necessary. I switch it on when I am feeling "Flea-ish", but...generally not needed (for me, that is...understand YMMV.)
8. This thing is powerful. Have had nothing but a Rumble 25 to play through for far too long. Great little practice amp, but the 500c is a real, gig-capable bass amp. It moves things.
9. For those who have asked about playing guitar through it? Do it. It sounds great. Just add your favorite modelling pedal. It will eat it up. (Granted, I am a blues-funk type of guitarist...no detuned death metal here.)
10. I am having too much fun.
11. Did I mention that this thing is powerful?
Now, a question or two...
1. I run a Digitech RP 400 pedal into this for compression, mostly, but also a little delay, flange, phaser, and most importantly envelope filter! Should I put this into the effects loop? (Mostly concerned about compression in this regard...shouldn't compression be at the start of the signal chain?)
2. Do I need to get a Fender bass again? Seeing all your pics of tasty J's and P's standing next to your Rumbles has got me gassing...
Okay, I think that's all for now. Thanks for a great forum!
