Fender Rumble Club

I put my new 500H and one 210 cabinet in my studio and the first thing that I noticed was the fan noise. My studio control room is very quiet and I find this noise a little annoying. It isn’t loud but it definitely isn’t quiet. My practice amp has been an Acoustic Image Contra (great for upright bass and small jazz gigs) and it is dead silent. I’m guessing that the Rumble Head won’t find a permanent home in the control room.

Does anyone else find the fan noise annoying?

Has anyone replaced the fan with a quieter one?

I always wondered why my old Peavey MKIV never had a fan at all with its 400 power modules when some of the later Peavey models did. I guess the fans are put in the Rumbles because of the ICE power D class modules needing the extra cooling..Linnin can you throw a bit of extra light on my observations please kind sir.

I`m new to the Rumble, just got my 500 combo about a month ago. I`ve never heard the fan, in fact I`m not sure that it comes on...
I don`t mean to hijack anything, so I apologize in advance. I haven`t seen anything in a search, so I need to ask: I noticed that when I dial the input gain all the way down, it doesn`t shut off the volume. I can still hear my bass. I realize it`s a gain control, not technically a volume control, but is this normal for this amp? or is something AFU?
Also, I`m not sure if it`s my imagination, but sometimes in the middle of a set it seems to drop volume/ clarity. I shut it off between sets and it appears normal again...I find myself always playing with the controls on my bass (PJ)..
I`m not sure if it`s just getting lost in the mix or a power amp problem..I`m pretty much running it flat with the bass control at 1 o`clock, input and master around 11 o`clock..
Sorry if I`m butting in here, but I figger the Rumble crowd will know..

First of all why would anyone even think of putting a high powered stage bass amp in a studio environment? You'd have to use a stethoscope to hear the fan in the Fender Rumbles anyway. At recording volume if you were close micing the cabinet you'd never hear the fan even if you mic'd it with a Telefunken U47! So minor complaints of non-existent fan noise is a moot point at best. Second: why not choose and use an amp made for the studio? Makes sense, right? Fender Bassman 100T is perfect with it's silent record mode; low 25 watt mode, or full 100 watt mode. Yes, Fender; known, loved and desired.

Yes, that is normal and the way it is designed. That way you can decide the gain needed for a passive or active bass. One member likes to boost the hell out of the gain to activate the Delta-Comp Limiter in a masochistic way.

This is disconcerting. If you are running ultra-high gain and banging up against the limiter, then yes you are getting what you asked for. Otherwise no.

Thank you for the fast reply, Linnin..I`m doing a gig this weekend where I can set it up closer to me so I can get a better read on it. I`ve also been playing with the tone controls a little more and I`m thinking the high mids boosted up a half an o`clock may help it cut through a little better..we`re not a loud band so I don`t need to crank it up..I wanted the power for the clarity and headroom..
just in case, though, I`ll bring along my Bassman 400 combo..

If your bass is active and you're fiddling around much. that could be the problem. Once you get into a venue; EQ to the room. Not your bass. Decouple from the floor. I like an Auralex GRAMMA. Other than that you should be gold.

I`m passive, running quarter pounders, decoupled from the floor with a tiltback stand, about a foot off the floor..I might just be over thinking everything here..The amp is new to me, and more than likely it`s all mental..I`ve asked a few friends that came down to hear us play and they said the amp sounded great, so maybe it`s my ear(s) and I`m being over critical..
So.....how do I join this Rumble club?

I have two passive and two active basses. The gain control needs only the smallest of tweaks to acommodate both. My gain knob is rarely past 9 o’clock.

IF I did the search correctly, I didn't find many complaints of fan noise in these 1,430 pages of over 28,590 posts.

The question of fan replacement has been asked before, but I found no response to it.
