Fender Rumble Club

Both my Jazz basses are a bit noisy even with both pickups full on but it's hardly noticeable when playing. When I had an SR300E I had even less hum in single coil then the Jazzes.

I think you need to bring it in and have a professional look at it. However if possible you could try your bass on an amp you know is producing little to no noise. It's entirely possible that it's the Ibanez having a ground issue but it's hard to diagnose over the internet.

How can I test if my bass has a ground issue ? Nothing change when I touch the strings or not...

Just as a note, both my 25s are nice and quite with every bass I use. Most are single coil.
Huh. I have an inexpensive Sterling Ray and an Ibenez with active circuits. No issue with any of my amps including Rumble 25 v. 3. Of my passive basses, the only one with noticable noise through the Rumble is a Peavy Foundation with hot pickups when I don’t run it in humbucking mode.

8 don't have the SR anymore and I honestly can't remember ever opening it up. I've yet to see an inexpensive instrument that used anything but the shielding paint in the control cavity.

I don't remember it producing much noise at all through my Rumble or my old GK and if it's only happening to you in single coil mode that makes me wonder if the bass is wired properly. I've played plenty of basses from the same factory that had little wiring issues out on the floor so it's a much cheaper thing to fix if that's the issue.

And I’m back, the 500 combo was always too much for home. Picked this up brand new for a clearance price last week locally.

I'll have the chance maybe this evening to check it out live in a music shop.

If the amp is noisy w/o anything plugged into it (not even an instrument cable), then it's the amp.
IF the amp is quiet on it's own, it's not the amp.

If touching strings makes no difference:
A: your bridge isn't grounded (or are you using tapewound or coated strings?)
OR
B: more shielding won't help

If the bridge is grounded, touching the strings when it's noisy should make a noticeable attenuation in the noise.
Check the bridge ground, you'll need a multi-meter set to Ohms (Ω).

Hey !
OK it's not the amp: totally quiet with nothing plugged in it
I used to have tapewound strings: replaced with nickels non coated: nothing happens when I touch them, neither better nor badder...

One of the things I’ve noticed during my relatively short time as a member on TB, and really enjoy about it, is the variety of different subjects that get aired and discussed. However, I wonder if anyone ever asked advice on how to get rid of stale smoke from a Rumble 500 combo. The second hand one I recently bought had previously been kept in a smoker’s house and, although I’ve had it for about 3 weeks now, it still stinks of the smoke of 5 years, though it is noticeably less smelly now than it was when I first brought it home. The cover I ordered for it doesn’t arrive for another few weeks, but even a towel placed on the top of the combo reeks of stale smoke after an hour or so. Can anyone help?

Sell it. Or let a fan blow through it. Remove the amp from the enclosure and clean it.

Thanks, but I think it’s in everything - the amp, the speakers, the wood, the grille cloth...everything! On a friend’s advice, I tried placing half-lemons in and around the room that the combo is stored in, but all that achieved was me having to drink my Jack Daniels without fruit. I guess without a magic remedy, it’ll just have to be a waiting game until the stink goes of it’s own accord.

Lots of things you can try. I'd start with an open box of baking soda placed next to the cab. We use baking soda inside our refigerator where it absorbs odors. Same principle here.

Second, try Febreze. My daughter once left fresh shrimp inside a car during the hot Texas summer. The car sat in our driveway while she was away for several weeks. When we opened the door of the car the stinch was so great it literally knocked us back. Once we found the source and removed it we then sprayed a VERY liberal dose of Febreze inside the car. Within a day the odor was gone...

That's exactly where I'm heading right now....

I tested my Rumble 25 and my sr300e at the music shop with their sr300e : same thing, very directional loud hum with frills... But once I tried my bass in a Rumble 40 : pure silence!! Only with gain and master volume at max the sound was annoying! So my Rumble 25 seems to be the culprit! They didn't have a R25 handy at the shop to test.
Could you do this and report here : put a AM radio on batteries near the Rumble 25 and turn the amp on. Tell me what happens. On mine the radio just goes crazy : a 95db of a loud hummmmmmm!!!. So maybe something like an electromagnetic problem?!

UPDATE: both the Rumble emit this awkward sound but it doesn't change my problem. At thome, the Rumble 40 paired with My SR300e in single coil mode was humming like crazy. BUT I tried the EHX Hum Debugger and it kills 90% of the noise without affecting the tone (only two or three notes out of 96 were somewhat affected). Now I can use my bass in single coil mode ! Thanks to you all !!!!

Yep, it’s been covered. No clue when. Or where. And as a member of the Tbird club on here, I don’t use the search feature on TB (one of the club’s unwritten rules...). I don’t have your answer, but there are methods that I recall being discussed re how to reduce the stink from Tolex. So, as much as it goes against every fiber in my being, try some searches here and on Google. I don’t think you can completely eliminate it, but there are ways to minimize it.

You really need to see if you can get the cab outside in the fresh air. If it's in an enclosed room the smell will be much harder to eliminate.

Here's a fairly recent long thread about cleaning products and technology.
