Fender Rumble Club

Yay NAD! Rumble 100

I kept stealing my 10yo’s Rumble 40, finally decided it was time to get my own.

Love it!

A quick Rumble question....Has anyone seen a professional bassist use a Rumble at a concert? I don't think I have. They must all still be going for "Stage Presence" I'm too old for that and my back thanks me!

I did. I posted about it in late January. When my band opened for Crash Test Dummies, their bass player was using a Rumble Combo with what I think was a Bassman 115 ext. Cab.

I posted pics of his rig and pedal board.

I've been to a bunch(8?)of Chicago concerts. They don't even pretend. No amps, no 'cabs'-direct to PA.

OK, interesting so I took some pictures. Not the best quality but it might help.
It looks like a simple board with, besides the input jacks and the switch, a big 25W 8 ohm resistor and 2 2.2uF 250V caps. The 2 woofers get a direct tap from the input(s) (the white wire from the board), the tweeter is connected to the red one.

BTW: you might want to check the link in my signature, I think there was a guy from Sweden or Norway who did the mod to a 500 combo - if I recall correctly. Try shooting him a PM to get some help (I haven't modded my 500C).

Also, for the interested ones: there are the 2 Eminence woofers with no type nr, a Fender FBT-1 50W / 8 ohms tweeter, a brace, some padding and a better look at the 2 ports (aka: cardboard tubes, painted black on the inside).

Thank you so much! That's really interesting. I just had a quick look. From my initial impression it would appear that the FULL setting connects the tweeter through a single 2.2 uF capacitors while the -6dB setting connects through the 8 ohm resistor and both 2.2 uF capacitors in series. From my understanding this would come out with a crossover frequency of 10 kHz for the 8 ohm tweeter.

I'll have a closer look and try to draw up a schematic over the weekend in case somebody else might be interested.

And thanks for the link -- some really interesting projects and lots of inspiration. I think my approach might be slightly different as I intent physically separate amp and cab and move the crossover to the cab.

That seems probable. I didn't have a multimeter to check but I would guess 'off' means the tweeter is not connected, 'full' the signal is going through 1 cap and at '-6dB' through the resistor and 1 or maybe both caps.

Interesting, that is more involved. My mod is quite simple: basically, pull the speaker wire out off the combo, cut it, attach a connector to both ends and make them accessible from the outside of the combo.

Probably, you should not use the existing speaker wires coming out off the 500 amp (as they are after the on board crossover as you noticed) but tap off the 'ext. speaker' directly.
Keep us posted!

Help me understand room acoustics and my distance from my amp. I was rehearsing last night with a pretty loud drummer/guitarist with my 500c. Standing maybe 3-4’ from the amp I felt like I was having a hard time hearing myself (pre and post were at noon to one).

When we finished, I said I probably need to bring my 1x15 ext cab because I felt like things weren’t cutting through. Everyone else said they had no issue hearing me.

Does where you stand make that much difference?

Where was your combo? If it was sitting flat on the floor, the sound is blowing by your knees. Get a kickback stand so you can angle the sound up to where you can hear it. The Mud stand is a popular option:
Mud Stand for Bass Amps — Mud Stand

The 115 would do the same thing. It would elevate the combo to where you can hear it. It will add some volume, but the extra cab pushes more air and gives the impression of more volume.

Loving the Stage 800. Still haven't had much chance to experiment, so just using presets which I've added compression to. I did build a patch, but on the gig found that I actually really like the Rumble V3 Clean setting. I'd read a few things about the tuner not being the best either, but that's not my finding. It's not as rapid as a Polytune or anything, as you need to hold the fsw button for 2 seconds, but after that, it's a very good tuner. The DI out is good too, quiet, and out of the box was sending a good signal to the desk.
Despite all the bells and whistles, it's still makes a very good 'plug in and play' amp. Even if you don't use the effects, just choose your favourite amp/cab sim and sit on that all night. There's so much flexibility!
Does anyone know what the deal with the gain staging is on the preamp? Has it got TONS of headroom? There's no clip light of course, but it never sounds close to breakup on a clean setting, which from my pov is fantastic.
