Each of us has a different 'need', whether it's in a gig setting, recording, or rehearsal. In the band(s) I play in, we don't use a set list[except the big band and they want me to sound like a UB]. We "script" the first 2-3 songs then 'feel' the crowd and choose songs accordingly, usually alternating between the three lead vocalists(each guitarist and me). The song is chosen, counted off, and away we go. There's really no time to go back to the amp(R200c or R40) and change any settings. I EQ to the room the best I can b4 we start and adjust my tone at the bass, either by the tone knob or where I pluck-or[occasionally] pick. Thus, no need-or $-for a Studio 40 or Stage 800.
AFA the concert band I'm in, I'm playing a string bass part or doubling the tuba, so again, one pre-downbeat tone setting(we're always at the same hall for rehearsals and concerts)on the R40, depending on which bass I'm using, normally my Ibanez AGB200.
On another note, I had a 76 'Blue line' SVT and 'fridge, 80-82. (A)It was overkill for the room we were in so it never got cranked. Maybe it woulda sounded better pushed(?)IDK.(2*)I prolly woulda been better off saving the $ I spent on that beast and just used the Kasino, which I already had and was a helluva lot easier to move. I don't see ever again needing anything larger than the 200c[with or w/o the 112 cab]. If we ever a play a bigger place, I'll see about line-outing to the PA, but, so far, the 200c alone has been enuff for the occasional outdoor gig.
* I never could index

Right now I'm groovin' on the Vintage tone.
