Fender Rumble Club

That difference in tone ...
But, to counter your concrete church floor stealing your rich lows, you might try strategic placement near a wall or corner per the "Boundary Reinforcement - The Allison Effect" link in the Rumble Talks section of your Rumble Club Wiki page....

Thanks G-Dog for pointing this thread out. A really good read.

This lead me to a discussion on back-ported cabs/amps. The reason I got my R40 was when playing with my semi-acoustic trio, I had a Yorkville BLOC80 combo (same size as my R40 but with a 15" driver!) which is back-ported. Playing on very small "stages", many times my amp would be very close to the wall (angled up) and it would be very boomy. The interesting part is 20-30 feet (6-9 meters?) in front of the amp the boom was gone but on "stage" it was awful. Anyway, I figured it was the rear porting causing the issue so one of the main reasons I got my R40 was it is front-ported. I have not had this problem with the R40.

Run an instrument cable from FX Send to FX Return. If that helps, then run the FX Return plug in & out several times to knock corrosion off the cut-off switch there. Then a little contact cleaner on a swab.
.
Thanks! My MarkBass combo had the same wonky behaviour that @munkeyfish described. A patch cable from FX Send to FX Return solved it. But I didn't think to work the cut-off switch.

That difference in tone may also be due to floor structure, too. A wooden floor (with or without carpet) on wooden joists can "enhance" bass tones, unlike a concrete floor. My church has a very big, layered, wooden altar/choir platform that tends to boom-ify* bass notes. And the house sub-woofer was at the top, middle of that platform when I started there and the soundman put my signal into it!

We tried a few layers of very thick carpet under my amp on the platform, and that helped a bit. But we finally got the sub moved to the carpeted concrete floor under the Communion table out front of the altar/platform and I got a stand for my amp to finally relieve all the boominess.

*boom-ify is not copyrighted and is suitable for anyone to use

Thanks G-Dog. That's very helpful. I'm not sure what my options are for moving the amp close to a wall or corner, but I will have a look. There is a wooden platform but it is full to capacity with the other instruments (keyboard/guitar etc.)

Ah, yes. The bass is always ignored by the other instruments, even though it is much more susceptible to placement than the other instruments! Just because their high frequencies don't suffer from placement, why should yours! :rollno: Then, if the place they send you makes you boomy, they just tell you to turn down!! :rage: And the guitarist can send his pedalboard, with 50 different effects, to the PA but, no-oOo-o, they want you to send a "direct" signal before any pre-amp so the soundman can set your tone!!! ... ... ...

... sorry, ... didn't mean to get on my soapbox. :cautious:

My rumble 40 is presently in the dining room- it’s my “bench amp” when I do any soldering/switching etc.

My first Rumble, the 25, is a recent acquisition for low volume jam sessions. I’m pleased with it.

@Playbyear -the 25 DOES sound great and can hang at a practice if everyone keeps their wits about them! I’ve even found the “all or nothing” OD button to be workable, and fun for some more rockin’ tunes!!

What’s that Sherwood metallic Jazz??? Adam Clayton?? Lol. I like it a lot!!

No bassTalk for over 24 hrs. in the The Rumble Club???

Allow me to revive:
I really love my 500c, it's gonna get a workout starting in May. 40 gigs booked between May and very early October in '22.

I love my 500c
The 500 is a great amp, no doubt about it. I don’t get to use mine as often as I’d like, as gigs are not that plentiful at the moment, and I use the provided backline on most. But when I do use it, it rocks the room.

"Provided backline". I've never seen one. None of the places we play have backlines or sound people/PA/FOH. If we don't 'provide' it, it ain't there.

Not really. If there is no backline, I bring my Rumble, but if there is, I usually don’t. If it turns out to be bad, there’s usually no chance to go back and get my Rumble, so I work with what I have available.

So, you don't keep the Rumble in reserve in the car, just in case?

Or do you not even take a car around Oslo?

I don’t drive, and the city places increasingly strict restrictions on the use of cars in the city centre anyway, so I mostly go on public transport or use a taxi.

It’s no big deal, Oslo is not huge by international standards, and it’s easy to get around without a car, but it does mean that I bring only what I’m sure to need to a gig.

On the upside, I can have a beer or two after the gig. :)
