Fender Rumble Club

Well the amp checked out and works flawlessly. Sounds really really good for such a light cabinet. I'm impressed..she will take her new place at church this week. Can't wait

Terrific, Kev! @KevyKev, you are now member #1505 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

How's about telling us a bit about yourself, Kev, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular. Whatever your situation, you're bound to fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Rumble On!

Having trouble finding anything helpful with the search function but I promise I did try.
I have a Rumble 500 that I got used right before the pandemic, so I didn’t really get a chance to put it through its paces before I was stuck in my little apartment with nowhere to crank it up. Since last summer I’ve been using it with a fairly loud 5-piece classic rock band and a quieter 4-piece surf/rock band. The overdrive channel was the first to go, almost immediately. The light faded and went out and the overdrive is non-existent. Fine, bummer, but I can live without overdrive.

I thought I was imagining things, but the next issue was very much confirmed on Saturday. If it’s on the Bright setting, it was fading in and out pretty significantly. I turned off the Bright and it seemed to be okay for the rest of the gig (5 hours off and on, 2.5 hours of playing). I suppose I can live without the Bright, too, but… what is going on here?? Has anyone had this happen? Is this something I can fix myself?

As a side note, I have previously had trouble with a 200 that had to be replaced TWICE under warranty. I love the Rumble but I need it to be reliable!

I swear I know how to use an amp. The master volume rarely even reaches 12 o’clock, usually around 9 or 10; any EQ sometimes to 2 o’clock depending on other settings, Gain sometimes as much as 3 o’clock but usually 12. I’m not blasting this thing. It gets used 3 hours a week with one band plus ~3 hours once or twice a month with band 2. Passive basses only.
I'm no tech but could there be dust, dirt, or even corrosion in the buttons that cause them to stop making contact? Has it been it a humid or dusty environment?

I've seen something similar with the Vintage button on my Rumble 40, with intermittent distortion. If I push the button in and out a few times, the distortion disappears.
I'm amazed that most buttons work most of the time for as long as they do. I was a E.E. and designed both hardware and software (I worked for Amoco Oil for 10 years and then Motorola for 15). Finding high-quality switches was always a challenge. There's often not a lot of contact area and they do get worn, dirty and/or corroded.

Kind of like what's happening with brakes on electric cars. Tests have shown that brakes on EVs perform worse than brakes on fuel burners. Why? Because peeps with EVs do a lot more one-pedal driving and let the regen slow the car down. The brakes don't get used nearly as much, so they rust and corrode.

@JakobT has the right idea for a lot of situations. Operate those buttons regularly, even if you don't use them often. And plug and unplug an instrument cable into your instrument inputs and the FX Send and Return (if you have them) regularly. Exercise is important for amps, too!

I'm taking the R500 combo + R115 out to play tonight. It will be my first time playing with people using this amp and cab. I'm hyped. I was looking forward to it all week, and the guy texted me and said I could run through his board to a Peavey 800w subwoofer. That sounded like it would be muddy as all get out to me, so I just said I'd rather use my Rumbles. He said OK, thank goodness.

If you can aim it southeast, I'll prolly hear it.;)

Report card for the R500c + 115....

It was overkill in a good way! I didn't need that much at all, as it turns out. It was a very small practice room, but the amp sounded great. I loved that I didn't have to 'push' it. I had gain and master both at about noon, EQ at 10, 2, 2, 2, bright and vintage on. I'll probably leave the 115 at home next time, but I'm glad I got to hear the whole thing. I love it. I think the R500c will be able to keep up with the "Keith Moon Jr" drummer.

Also, being able to load and unload them without destroying my back is pretty awesome. Love those Rumbles!

I had a 112 cab that I ran my 200c into. Yes, it coulda been stupidly loud, but what I really got from the pair was 'fullness'-for lack of a better term. I've also had the chance to play through 2 daisy chained R100s. Saweet! Nearly perfect-for what I do. I own one 100; will get a second "after the holidays".(just not sure which holidays)

Fullness is a very good word for what I heard (and felt lol) last night. I didn't have mine "stupidly loud", but a point you and I seem to be making is that it didn't need to be. I had highs, lows, and mids in great proportion, and I heard myself easily. No volume war at all with the other guys.

'Zackly. I hadda turn down the 200c to avoid blowing away the room. Loved the combined tone. Unfortunately, there was only one place we played semi-regularly that I could justify taking the 2 of them(200c/112), and the cab sat under my kitchen table for almost a year, so I sold it to someone who'd use it.

I'm hoping to find a situation that will let me use the whole rig with regularity. I have a few options that I'm in the investigating process with right now, but I'd like to use it all. I do have the R40 for quieter things. What can I say, though? I still like getting loud. :bassist::D

Part of what keeps us working fairly steadily is that we aren't loud. We can be, but the places we play-and the age group we play for(plus management)-don't want loud. They wanna be able to talk to each other.:eyebrow:

Might be something down Branson way where you can play REALLY loud!
