Fender Rumble Club

I tried the sock trick on my Rumble 40 today !
Here is a pic of one of the 2 very basic ports :

And with the socks in :D :

It’s working and the farting port noise disappeared ;)
Soundwise it just seems a little less deep in the low register which is somehow logical.

Gotta say that i can clearly hear now the speaker starts to crack when playing a little loud with some bass eq added or in vintage mode tho... and it happens pretty quick at medium volumes :(

I’m having a hard time understanding how those 10 speakers could handle 200w of power in the Rumble 800... are those different speakers ?
I use theese to plug my r100, works well enough:

Question for rumble 100 owners, I’m sure it’s been discussed already but are people happy with the top end / highs on Rumble 100 v3 combos? There is no tweeter, so I’m wondering if the speakers used provide plenty of clarity?
Thanks

I'm not sure I'd say the stock speaker provides plenty of clarity only because to my ears replacing it with a Basslite S2012 greatly increased clarity and definition - and also really tightened up the low end. That said, I've ended up turning the highs and high mids down a bit to get the old school thump I was looking for. Really happy with the Basslite though - it takes the R100 to another level.

Yes, i was considering that speaker upgrade, but i could do nothing with the stock one and it would cost approx. 50% of the price of the r100's brand new price here. Maybe once I take on a big cab-making project :o

My first Rumble was a 200c. The only time I use the tweeter is when I'm playing a CD through it on breaks (except if I forget to turn it off after the break-oops!). In the manual, it states that using the tweeter may cause unwanted distortion. For me, all distortion is unwanted. I don't miss the tweeter in my R100-or my R40, or my Bassman 25-at all. They are, after all, bass amps. YMMV.

What does plugging the ports do for you? I plan on adding a little lining to the bottom and one side.

I'd think about changing out the speaker with the Basslite S2012, but apparently you can't just do a straight swap. You need to add tubes to the ports. Although there are pages and pages and pages to go through explaining it, there is no simple one or two posts explaining it. You have to read about 18 pages of technical data and conflicting ideas. I wish someone would just put the plans into a simple post. I don't care about the scientific part.

Question regarding recording into an interface from the DI XLR output of a Rumble 200, this is a line level output? My Audio Interface says use a 1/4inch TRS cable only for line level input to record, I have a XLR to 1/4TRS cable, should I use that or just use an XLR from the DI and an XLR into the audio interface?
Would using a XLR input instead of 1/4TRS into the audio interface (from the Rumble DI) possibly damage the mic preamp ? That seems to be what I'm reading, I could use some clarification

This may not answer your questions directly, but:
Does your interface have a level meter or a LED that lights up if it is getting too much power. I run my Rumble XLR to my Tascam DP-32SD frequently. It has a level meter that I can use to make sure it is powered correctly. I would not think twice of running either XLR to XLR or XLR to TRS.

"Line Levels" can be different with different companies since there is no absolute standard. That being said, the XLR on a Rumble is a line level output. I also have an XLR to TRS cable. They work exactly like an XLR to XLR so you can plug into a TRS input.

Here are two screenshots from the manual for what they are worth. The first one has important information:

The bright switch can be used to compensate for the lack of a tweeter. Also you can increase the highs on the eq. Many 112 combos are tweeterless.

Acoustic foam or fiber lining and/or plugs do for sound what sheer curtains, of various colors and/or thicknesses, do for sunlight through windows; it tones down the brightness and/or harshness. :smug:

You don't have to do it scientifically, if you don't want to. Lotsa people make a straight swap without a lot of reading. But then they kinda have to say that it went fine and sounds great, even if it really doesn't.

The studying is only necessary for the best chance of good results, since speaker parameters and cabinet characteristics can vary so much. You do need a certain inclination to DIY. Or you can pay somebody else to do it scientifically for you. :)

I understand that there is science behind it all and I agree that it is all necessary and good. I read the entire thread on upgrading the speaker and ports in the R100 and ended up just scratching my head. I trust that other people have way more knowledge about speaker/cabinet design than I do because they do. I just wish there was a single post that condensed it all, explaining the correct speaker and the port tubes length and which walls to put acoustic lining inside. When I said I don't care about the science, I only meant that I don't need to understand the technical data to follow basic directions. But then again, I'm not really unhappy with my 100 as it is.
