Fender Rumble Club

I bought a Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus Pedal, and I tried running it through the FX loop on my Rumble 500. I connected the Send to the pedal input, and the Return to the mono output of the pedal. The result was noisy and very distorted like it was overdriven no matter what I did with the pedal's knobs. I also tried adjusting things on the front panel of the amp, but to no avail. Then, I just plugged my bass straight into the pedal, mono out into the amp, and it sounded great. I'm wondering if I missed something with the FX loop that made it sound that way. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I've yet to get the FX loop to work well as an FX loop. They work great for chaining two Rumbles, though.

I didn’t know this! (Maybe ’cause I don’t use pedals. I prefer the built-ins of my Rumble Studio.)

The Rumble’s Master volume control is upstream of the FX Loop, so any volume increase through the loop must come from the pedal(s) as the final control.

Is the Master after the FX Loop really that much better for pedals on the 800s?

I use a Boss OC-5 in the effects loop of my Rumble 100 and it adds no noise whatsoever. It might need a certain voltage or something like that. Sounds like it works with some and not others.

Fresh battery or pedal plugged in? If you run a cable directly from send to return on the amp does it sound OK? If that works, how does it sound if the pedal is in the FX loop but off? (Off on this pedal is still buffered.) Per the specs on Boss's website, input and output are both at -20 dBu, so shouldn't be getting any odd gain as you describe hearing. Sure you used the pedal mono (A) output?
1) pedal is plugged in.
2) ran cable directly from send to return, sounded fine
3) pedal off is still a touch noisy
4) yes, I'm using mono out.

It seems really sensitive to higher volume settings. Once I get to a certain level, it starts to become distorted. I'm also noticing it more on an active bass than on a passive one, which actually makes sense to me. I was hoping to bypass the DeltaComp Limiter circuit but since it sounds great not using the FX loop, I guess that's what I'll do.

Thanks for the input all who replied.

I have a 500 combo V3, and I don't understand what Fender was thinking putting the Return of the effects loop after the Master.

Really seems weird to me, Master, to actually remain a "Master", should be the last control regardless of signal chain configuration.

Aloha, FR! @FRoss6788, you are now member #1733 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Put that number in your TalkBass Signature for safe keeping. Then make yourself at home here and on your Rumble Club Wiki page, the repository of all Rumbling wisdom and knowledge.

Oui, monsieur Ross, the Rumbles started out as 7ender's small amp value line with very limited features, while the Bassman was (and is) the premium line. But, as the Rumble's popularity, and powers, grew they added more features to them. The pre/post switch on the XLR Out and the Master after the FX Loop are both features, by popular demand, of the newest 800 amps.

So, FR, how about telling us a bit about yourself, such as your bass experience in general and your Rumble journey in particular? You'll fit right in here since we have all kinds. But we all love to ... ... ...

Rumble On!

I refinished my two Duke LeJeune 110 cabs. I forgot how good they sound being pushed by my R200 head:
Two cabs.jpg

It doesn't quite sit right on the stack, but it sure sounds awesome!

I do have two sets of rubber feet that were too small to fit over the carry handles on the tops of the cabs. I'm thinking I might put them on the one side of the cabs, so I can stack the while they are horizontal.

They do sound just about as big as my R210/R115 pairing and just about as loud, but clearer, more articulate and more modern sounding. It's actually a bit fuller sounding than the Gnome on top and that tiny Gnome actually sounds really good.

Hi all,
Does anyone have any experience they could share on mixing the Neo Rumble 800 combo with the ceramic magnet-ed 2x10? Good/bad/the same/different?
Other than a few extra KG to carry, how they pairing up?
I’ve emailed Fender to ask if a Neo 2x10 is in the pipeline, but no response as yet.

From the Rumble 800 Combo sub-thread:
So just for clarification: the 800 will play nice with a rumble 115 or 210? Or are the new drivers in the 800 an issue?

No issues at all with the new drivers pairing with the Rumble 115 and* 210 cabs.
The 210 cab was especially meant to pair up with the Rumble 200 and 500 combos as the 210 cab can accept the higher wattage.
As I recall the 210 is rated up 700watts*, pairing it with the R800 would be sending the 210 ext cab 400watts [continuous]*.

Cheers, Davyo

* The 115 cab is only rated at 300 watts continuous, so not quite suitable for 400 watts continuous from the R800c. The 210 cab is rated 350 watts continuous (700w program, but that's not a comparable rating), just like the R500 head is 350 watts continuous at 8 ohms. However, it has the exact same speakers as the Rumble Stage 800 combo rated at 400 watts continuous alone. And they make an identical black-grilled 210 cab specifically for the Stage, too. So, 7ender obviously is very comfortable running 400 watts continuous into the Rumble 210 cab.

Maybe others here will also comment.

Thanks for the reply!

Does anyone know, unlikely given how closely guarded manufacturers keep this info… but does anyone know if the Rumble 10” drivers in the 800c are the same as those in the 500c/S800/210, albeit with a different magnet?!
I don’t suppose Fender would share, but it’d make for a more assured match up with the 800c and cab if we knew xmax was the same.

The 800c has neodymium drivers as advertised

That is exactly my rig. Sounds awesome together. No issues. For what it's worth, I A-B'ed the R500c (same speakers as the R210) and R800c side-by-each and could possibly detect somewhat subtle-ish difference in "tightness." The neo's being a tad more crisp. Connect up the R210 to the R800c and I can't tell the difference. The rig sounds incredible. If you're thinking of adding an R210, DO IT! I wouldn't wait for Fender to come up with a neo 210. You could be waiting awhile.

I really don't know anything about speaker design, but I would guess there are at least some other differences, as well. You might try searching the Eminence website for such models. Or even call and ask if there is any such thing as "identical speakers except for ceramic vs neo magnets". My guess is no.

But that wouldn't necessarily make them sonically incompatible. In my own experience my ceramic R500c speakers sound wonderful with my Bassman 115 neo cab! Both high and low volumes give a very even, rich tone with no significant difference between them at all! Neither their 10" vs 15" size, nor ceramic vs neo magnets, seem to me to make the slightest difference.

No, but they're working on the NEO 212, soon to be available at a retailer near you.
