Fender Rumble Club

I used HOLMImpulse to match the graphs in the wiki. Will be interested in what Akiyama is using.
My results are close-mic and playing my Jazz bass. The graphs in the wiki are sine sweeps, right? I am no audio engineer. I assume the load on the speaker and response of the signal of my Jazz vs. a sine sweep fr at a set SPL would be different?
Playing conditions: Decibel X using A-weighting, Fender Player I Jazz bass, PV ‘62s, Rumble 100, 12 o’clock, except treble at 10 o’clock, 1.5 feet on-axis Open E, picked with med gel pick, neck 100%, bridge 50%, tone 70%. Purple peak

What do the pink and yellow plots represent? Is the pink plot the sine sweep and the yellow plot you playing the open E note? It is not the same, but it's not fundamentally different, either. If you took several measurements and averaged them all out, there's a chance they would be identical.

I would suggest you use a transparent interface to record that open E sound and play it back from the recording rather than playing it twice.

If you did all that, the pink plot definitely does not account for the difference in sound. Attenuated high frequencies are frequently caused by impedance mismatch. The interplay between the guitar output and amp input may be causing this. A low output impedance on the sine sweep source compared to high output impedance of a guitar may cause a significant difference.

This could be confirmed by comparing sound played on the guitar vs. recorded and played back from an interface. You might want to record playing a scale and compare the output from the headphone out and from the line out vs. the original.
Same with playing the guitar into the amp and comparing the output of the headphone out and line out.

If one of the amps is significantly different from the transparent interface, it's actually a fault. not a feature.

The pink/purple is the peak reading. The yellow line is fr graph when I took the screenshot at a non-standardized time after picking the string with the upper harmonics decaying over time. I apologize for not giving those details and causing any confusion. Are you saying the peak readings are charting the same between the two amps or am I misunderstanding you? Just eyeballing, the peak reading of the 4 ohm unit looks much hotter than the 8 ohm unit in the 2-4 kHz range plus a couple other peaks a little lower in the midrange or am I misreading the graphs?

Thanks for the suggestion of recording one performance (directly into a DAW, I assume?) and then playing it through the amps for standardization. I no longer have the Rumble 100 with the 8 ohm speaker. It malfunctioned and Fender replaced that unit with the 4 ohm unit. Unfortunately, I cannot test them side-by-side in any form.

So, my iPad had bass boost on, I turned it off and there may have been a small difference, but not enough to make any real difference.

I spent a little bit of time last night working on my issue again. I made what I think is a pretty big finding. Apparently for the first time, I plugged in my bass and played through the headphones without my iPad plugged in. The volume was very high which surprised me since I had not touched the knobs since the last time I tried it. Ok, so I adjust the level to where I want it and I plugged in my iPad, instant significant drop in volume. I had no music, or anything else for that matter, coming out of the iPad. It is almost like it is splitting the output power between the instrument and the aux???

Hmmmm!?! Perhaps the Aux In/Headphones section of the block diagram can answer your splitting question? Unfortunately, I'm not technically astute enough to interpret that myself, but perhaps someone else here can? I don't think the Pre/Post status of your 100 would have any bearing on the situation.

Just a suggestion, but I would check your physical cable connection between the iPad output to the Aux input.

What model of iPad are you using? Does it have a "normal" 3.5mm headphone connector, or do you use a Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter?
Any other adapter plugs used?

Also, what type of cable? TRS on each end? I know that some i-devices have a proprietary TRRS type plug/jack arrangement, and I have had problems in the past when using adapter plugs with them. Some "seemingly correct" adapters didn't work right.

If there is a problem with proper channel and ground contacts it can cause weird "out of phase sound" or shorts in one channel.
Who knows what that trouble that could cause in the mixing section of the Rumble...

Worth a look!

It looks like you're shorting the right channel to ground at the adapter.
Try a cable with 3.5mm TRS plugs on each end.

For some reason, I was thinking you meant the plugs on the 1/4” guitar cord. The 3.5MM plus is TRS. Now I have my head out of my….😂

They sound great with Thunderbirds, too!
Thunderbirds and Jazzes are the best! Two pickups. Tons of sonic options that are #1. Best darn lookin' basses on the planet, by far.

I am 5 foot 8. The Thunderbird needs a bigger reach than what I have. :crying:

A Les Paul bass would be right up there with the Jazz and Thunderbird. Maybe Gibson/Epi can make a Les Paul bass that is affordable for the working class as an alternative?

Suzi Quatro played a Thunderbird for a couple of years. Suzi is 5'0". AFAIK, her signature 'bird is normal size. The trick if it seems too big is to use a long strap, let the bottom hang a bit low, and angle the neck up.

Epi has made one in the past. I don't think it's currently in production. You can find them used. No idea what they're like.
