Well in the case of the brands I mentioned, they are not improper copies, they are boutique quality versions of the mass produced original. Less so for the g&l, though it is a fender baby though not as boutique as the others.
Fenders are fine for me, but I respect what these high end builders do with the classic fender designs, for them rich folk out there. They can't be lumped in the same category as "fender copies"
Personally, if I am going to spend that much more on a bass, it isn't (and hasn't) going to be a fender style, in fact, back in 2000 the same price got you either an Ernie ball stingray or sterling (ebmm bass not the later sterling brand), or a warwick FNA, which also had the same style pickup/eq. One was hand made in San Luis obisbo of your regular fender tonewoods, and the other was built by west German robots with exotic wood necks, and much more adjustable hardware and super reinforced necks. So I own fenders for fenders, and Warwick's for "stingrays". Worked out pretty well.
Though I did manic purchase 3 stingrays ranging from the $2k classic, BFR HH and a standard. Of course I had to sell them when I came too.
