Fender Rumble Club

I sometimes play with a guy who has the full blown old school Hammond B3 and Leslie rig...talk about huge low end. When he plays bass notes, i completely drop from the mix.....I try to bring a sizzly Stingray or a P-Bass with Rounds for just such an occasion:)
A true B3 player mostly uses only the right hand to play - the left hand is doing all sorts of things with the draw bars.

I have no end of trouble with keyboard players and that left hand, especially pianists. Piano bass notes in particular are the ones that clash with bass guitar. I tell them to sit on your left hand. Some laugh and say they know exactly what I mean (those are the keepers). Others look at me weird, I explain why, citing Helmholtz. I really don't know much about Helmholtz, but it seems to get their attention in that over-intellectualized brain of theirs.

EDIT: Invalid Link Removed

If they forget and start comping on bass, shoot spitballs.

But seriously, where are their f^&*ing ears?

I really think we bassists should be allowed to cull bad pianist. No one would miss them. (plus--I need a steady supply of crab trap bait)

Speaking of the B3--I am a veteran sax man from the chitlin' circuit back in the 80's. No bassist allowed! lol--they played bass with their left hand and roots with the foot.

I have this clear bite and gritty sound right next to this tone deaf idiot....Rumble beauty and this piano assassin destroys the harmonic balance of the Universe.

it's as if he has slandered Fender and Ernie Ball.
IMO Bite is not the way to counter these fools - do it with low end. Get an Ampeg SCR-DI and dial up the deepest, nastiest bass tone; is that the Underworld? Anyway, vibrate him out of his seat. Keyboard amps can't keep up below 100 Hz with a good bass amp.

Every once in awhile, we have to show them who holds all the cards.

I did that--no effect on his mindless brain. So--I went for a clearer tone so that (at least I hoped) that the leader could distinguish. But--it was for naught. I will not play when he is on the schedule. When I play sax--I play improvised solos---this idiot fooks up simple 3 chord Christian rock songs. I can't stand another moment of him. And--they have the keys running (more like ruining) through the mains.

TBH--I didn't tell my wife anything but she hears me practice all the time. She said to me after Sunday---"Please don't play with that pianists ever again--it is so embarrassing. I saw you stopping for long periods while he was holding long low notes--what is wrong with him?"

I would ask him why he does this, in front of the whole band. Good to hear his answer. If there is a music director, see what his response is.

Trust me--I have been around this mountain. He swears his innocence--then doesn't do it for a while--then starts again. Everyone is so inexperienced they keep assuming it has to be the bass and that damned Rumble.

My wife says he is doing it on purpose--I tend to agree. We play 2 services. A few weeks ago one of the good pianist was playing. between services he came up and fiddled with the piano--and guess what? We had sub bass attached to the sound for the second service. Honestly-when I was younger and not as close to the Lord--I would have kicked his arse outside between services.

One of the soundmen--who is there occasionally just cuts him out of the sound--he is good drummer btw.

The acoustic/electric band I'm in is losing a guitarist but gaining a keyboardist. The first thing he said at our first practice together was "Let me know if/when I'm stepping on your bass."

A couple of songs it happened and we worked out how to make it sound better.

It's my first time with a keyboardist. I think we're going to be just fine.

I beleive there are times when Kharma needs a helping hand.

lololol I just about lost my religion yesterday.

He was yacking away about how he never plays the low notes--then contradicted himself by saying it has 88 keys and is meant to be played down low.

I said--thanks for the biblical experience. I now know whats it's like to be a Philistine for I have been slain by the jaw bone of an ass. (that is my old man savagery coming out--no one laughed---except me.)

Man, I played with a really grooving band last night with keys, bass, drums and me on sax. Never an issue.

I have been in bands as A WORSHIP LEADER where I had to gently train the pianist not to step on the bass. But--I am not doing that crappy job anymore and can see the current one doesn't know how to deal with it.

The all CAPS is because I am frustrated with my situation--not with you!

We get blamed for everything!

I do a lot of the singing as well....many of the tempos were so fast I was having a hard time getting all the lyrics out, during the set I actually had to give some hand signals and ask that he slow down a bit.....which of course upset his ego, he got angry and threatened to pack up and go on the spot. I normally would leave this kind of feedback for in between sets, but the tempos were sooo fast we were losing dancers and it sounded embarrassing. Not sure he will return to the band or not but I certainly can't play with a drummer who apparently has fundamental issues with tempo. It's like a guitar player who plays the whole song in the wrong key...but does not recognize he is in the wrong key. To top it off, this was a fairly good paying gig at a club that books A-list bands...

Isn't the correct answer to, " Then why are there 88 keys?".....

"For when the bass player doesn't show up."
