First, THANK YOU to everyone making a contribution to my post. There has been lots of wisdom and many ideas. Interestingly, about half a dozen of us have much the same issues with the Fender Jazz Deluxe 5 string (incl. non-deluxe models) from that era. There must be many more out there somewhere!

Second, after many hours of research I’ve drawn up a list of pickup replacements that, 1) seem to suit my sound needs. 2) that fit this instrument. 3) that I can buy in UK. At this point cost is not taken into account (there is a set of Norstrands, but they’re over £400 a set, and that is out of the question!).

Here’s the list…

Seymore Duncan. SJB3-5 (= Quarter Pound). Apollo Jazz Bass 5, 67/70.

Bartolini. 57CBJD-L1/S1 (= a set, Neck & Bridge)

Dimazio. None

Aguilar. AG5J Classic.

Delano. JC5 HE/M2 (am currently unsure about the fit: need to ask Delano).
