Did I miss the part where you mentioned rebiasing your amp for the new tubes, or at least confirming that the bias is correct?

Did I miss the part where you mentioned rebiasing your amp for the new tubes, or at least confirming that the bias is correct?
well Charlie, the bias was set for the prior tube set (Ruby 6L6CG-STR's), however it has not been set for the new tubes. I am burning them in now (all is going well) and will consider whether I need to have the amp re-biased this week. Do you suggest this as a matter of course ?
ok! the tubes burned in just fine yesterday and today. I also got my tech lined up to check the bias on the amp this week.
After a few hours of burn in yesterday, I decided to play through the amp a bit. I was not really expecting to hear very much difference, but was very surprise by a distinctly bigger low end; fuller in the lows (60-100hz) and low mids (100-300hz). The change in tone profile was enough that I had to reset my usual tone control and EQ settings on the amp. Also felt like it punched a bit harder in the low mids when the master was turned up past practice room volume.
Very cool, maybe these new production 7581A's are actually going to give this amp some tangible differences vs the std 6L6's I had in it.
Makes an already good amp sound even better - can't be bad.

A coincidence of reviving this thread and and searching 'tube amp' on ebay has a Super Twin head on it's way to me. I have really regretted selling the one I owned a couple years ago. I was on a 'practical' kick and I've come to the conclusion that something like this should just be enjoyed for it's own sake. I'll be chiming in here in the coming days/weeks for sure.
cool. enjoy. I don't use my Studio Bass for all gigs, but for those that call for an more old-school type tone it just nails it. Please let us know how your new acquisition works out.

Yeah, absolutely. Especially when changing to a new production tube with a different plate dissipation rating. In this case at least you have subbed in a higher rated tube though. Do you understand cherry plating and how to look for it?
I do not even know the term cherry plating, but after reading the article you linked to, I understand. There does not seem to be any red-plating/cherry plating going on at the moment. I have also lined my amp tech up to check the bias with the new tubes, so all of this should be addressed this week, and hopefully I'll get to take her out for next weekends gigs.

I blew a fuse in my supertwin and I'm not savy in these matters. will any 6 amp 125v cartridge fuse suffice? I can't seem to locate anything that is "6 1/4a." At least I can't find any that will ship to canada

By the way, if anyone is looking for a Studio Bass/Super twin, [This invalid link has been removed] has a Super Twin head for sale right now. They're asking $599.00 which, IMHO, is high, but they have been known to negotiate...

It has been returned and a refund is due very soon. Now, for the good news! There is a very tidy Super Twin combo for sale locally. Recently re capped too. I'm going to check it out and make an offer if it is as good as it looks in the photos.
So for those who have done the conversion to a head case- is there any market for your remaining combo cab w/ speaks? Old and Fender usually means $$$ but do these have any resale value (like enough to pay for a Mojo repro case for the amp)?

Did my first gig with the Super Twin, new JJ 6L6's - not burned in (unless a 4 set night counts). I was really happy, the best tube head I've played through.
I had some concern that it would not be loud enough, thankfully it was plenty loud into the LDS/Faital duallie 15.
I do plan on taking it to a tech to have it checked out and address the master volume issue - it acts like an on off switch, no sound before 5 and no increase in volume from there up.
While at the tech I'll build the final head cabinet. Mojo carbon fiber tolex, expanded aluminum grille (try for a steam punkish look) and some sort of side mounted handle, I'm thinking of installing these at the same angle that Mesa did with the non rack mount Strategy.

I bought this brand new in 1979, and played it exclusively until 2005 when a severe 'LifeQuake' forced a sale.
I've been thinking about picking one of these up. What do they generally run for these days, not all original but in good working condition? I couldn't find many sale threads for them.
I've seen them from the high $300's up to $600 for a clean full original combo. Mine is just the amp section in a Mojo tone headcase (which is fine for me). I paid $400, and was happy with that considering the NOS Sylvania and RCA red label 6L6's that came with it were worth more than what I paid for the whole amp.
Not very many were made, so while they do come up for sale from time to time, its not too often.

OK, here is my local Super Twin combo find! Real good shape with cover. I am ordering a head case to be made for it. It sounds amazingly good through the 2 12's, I just picked up a 210 cab for it-even gooder! I got both these for less than the DOA head alone. I haven't yet checked all the tubes. 4 of the 6 6L6's are Fender branded w/ 2 no names in there.

emblymouse, do you plan to keep the amp as is (combo), or pull the amp section and put it in its own headcase ? I know there are opinions about this going both ways:
conversion makes it more practical or maintain this interesting bit of 70's tube amp history
I got my Studio Bass already converted to a stand alone head. I have seen a few of the full original EV loaded combo's too.
Mine is getting gigged Sat and Sun this weekend. Got it all biased for the new 7581a power tubes and its ready and rarin' to go.

Amazing tone, sits so nicely in the mix - kudos again to JohnK for the inspiration on these heads.
I'll be taking it to a tech next week to work out a few kinks, which will give me the time to build a proper head cab.

Hey, I posted the finished amp transplant in the Super Twin thread and forgot about you guys. The head case is by The Cab Guy. Prices beat Mojotone quality still right up there. The Tolex is a Marshall style and then the Wheat grillcloth. I sold the empty cab locally which paid for 4 of the 6 new 7581's.
