The EMGs also tipped the scale for me since if I went the Fender route I would probably have replaced the stock pickups with EMGs.

I have three Fenders and all of them I’ve swapped out pup’s for EMG’s. About the closest hard rock/metal I play with the band is a couple each of Free and Led Zeppelin tunes so, IMO genre doesn’t matter much when it comes to the tone you like. The ESP LTD AP is such a nice instrument. You’re probably going to love it! I just dug mine out of the case after not touching it for about four months and the neck has not moved a bit.

I hesitated to pull the trigger on one of those masayoshi's and i think it will haunt me for a long time.
How does the PPJ sound?

Very different from a regular PBass: it doesn’t have that pronounced low-mid bump.

With all pickups on full, it’s a very neutral sound with a little mid-scoop. Great rock sound similar to the Duff McKagan tone on the first GnR album.

If you play with the pickup balance, there’s a huge range of tones. If you roll off the front pickup, you can nail the classic Yamaha BB2000 tone ... which is pretty much my favorite PJ sound.

Anyway, it’s a LOT more versatile and usable than I had anticipated.

Bounce a dead post back, so how is the LTD? I got a AP4 used from GC, kept it about a week, and took it back, its still hanging on the wall at GC for 6+ months. To others: LTD's are good basses, I have owned one for 23 years, It does not see much action any longer. But they have bad resale. Look for one used.

I have an AP5 and I don’t see me ever getting rid of it. It’s the only 5 string I’ve found that I can play well. The thinner neck and wider string spacing really seemed to help me.

Yeah, about the original post, I am about to sell my 3rd fender p bass, nice 60th anniversary model. I bought it a few months ago. just can’t dig the sound. I keep trying, 3 times. The fender can’t compare to my LTD B205 on sound. Looking at another LTD. Me personally I like the double humbucker models.

Gotta correct what I said, it was a AP-204. I had a LTD D4 but I am not a neck-thru type of person.

I have owned an ESP/Grass Roots BassIV for a year now. It was based on the '60s Fender VI visually and was originally a 'signature' bass for the Japanese market only. For one, Fender doesn't make a bass like this (a 4-string lookalike of the Bass VI) and the only 3 pu bass they offered was the short-lived Rascal. So ironically - it's hard to 'vs' with Fender as it's kind of a unique ESP bass. They pop up now and then from Japan eBay'ers.
