I'm not a big Korn fan, They are OK with me.

Any Cat, who you, and everbody damn else in this world, knows who he is, and he plays bass for a living, and you enjoy bashing him, for whatever reason.....

Well, keep practicing. Maybe someday, people will know who you are too. (not like now, where everyone calls you a lamer). And then, we'll be able to bash you too, 'cause we'll know who you are.

We don't know now.

There are many of here who play bass for a living. Myself included.

Truth be told. Id rather keep practicing and playing just on a local or regional level and be known for being a a fairly decent player with good tone rahter than known by many, and not respected for sub par skills and piss poor tone.

Tone, appearance, and idiocy aside, I think the man grooves fairly well.

And I'd agree they have a very unique sound that seperates them from most other commercial metal bands of the '90s. Hell, they started the whole genre, something has to be said for that regardless of how hideous most of the music is. When I was an angry young man in '94 they were great.

I LOVE it when people try to pretend they don't know who Fieldy is, or Korn for that matter, just to try and seem like they are "cool". Its almost hard to believe, as much as everyone on here calls plain, boring bass players "innovative" for doing the same thing millions of others have done/are doing, when a real innovater comes your way you bash him. Face it, no one had that tone before fieldy, and it is quite ballsy. No one played like him either. Why can't anyone respect what hes doing?
" i dont like that music" who cares? I hate jazz but im not going to bust jacos chops. If John Turner said he was a korn fan, everyone in this thread would be talking about how fieldy influenced them in some way, and how theyve always thought he was great. Hes not flipping burgers, you are.*

*note, i dont care what your job is, its an example.

Im not a huge korn fan, hell i dont even own any of their cd anymore, but his tone* is the probably the best i have ever heard. He put alot of thought into how he could get his sound, and it is that, HIS sound.

* by his tone, i mean on the first 2 alblums.

Please dont put words in my mouth or thoughts in my head. I wouldnt give a crap if JT liked Fieldy and worshipped the ground korn walked on. I still wouldnt like them.

I do believe that if one looks hard enough they can find good in any music. I think Fieldy is rhythmicly solid and to some extent can appricate the bands sound. No this does not mean I like them.

Feildy is one of the reason's why I picked up bass in the first place, the reason why I liked him so much was his tone and his general groove. I still love Korn alot.

Now with that said I also absolutely love Peter Gabrial, Black Sabbath, Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Fates Warning, Porcupine Tree, Cream, Govt Mule, In FLames, Sentenced, Dark Tranquility, Messuga(I know I bombed that spelling), Jazz, Blues, Funk, and overall all kinds of music. I dont really think to much of Feildy's tone anymore, and he doesn't really influence me at all play wise, but he is one of the main reason's why I started.

Anywho, this thread is actually staying open alot longer then I expected.

Well till next time,

TTFN, Ta ta for now.

WHOA NELLY!!! I like Korn, mabye I'm one of the few that do. I also believe the Korn of today is completely different than say when their self-titled album came out. I think for me its their guitarist style of playing. In my opinion it's very unique and interesting. Although th one member I've never been able to stomach is Fieldy. Can't say I like him at all. How do YOU know all these other millions don't feel as I do? Mabye it's just you thats a fan.:spit: :D

I suppose you're kidding, Mike. That or you don't know lots of metal bands.

I suppose you can tell me about another band that sounds remotely like Korn?

I'm biased since they are from here, but I have yet to hear a Korn spin off band.

I've heard Black Sabbath spin offs, Beatles spin offs, even Beach Boys spin offs, but i have yet to come across a korn spin off.

Perhaps you don't listen to mainstream music, but there is a genre called nu-metal that Korn can pretty much be credited/blamed for creating (along with Limp Bizkit's first album, which was totally a Korn spin off).

Not to say that any of those bands sound exactly like Korn, because they don't, but there are many similarities.

I can't think of any band that sounds like Korn. What I meant is I refuse to consider a band "unique" just because of their sound. I could play root notes on a Wishbass tuned down 3 octaves lower than low B, and play it with a friggin' carrot for that extra special tone, would you consider me "unique" for this?

P.S. Sorry Mike, no offense meant. I'm just extremely sad and angry today.

Interesting watching this discussion unfold. I have been listening to some 80's hair metal the past few days just to get a reference point on metal musicianship in general. There is no way that some of those studio performances were actually done by those guys! I know that this is no secret now, but listening really drove it home.

For instance, listen to "Unskinny Bop" by Poison (as much as it may hurt!). You can't convince me that Rikki Rocket and/or Bobby Dall could play that deep in the pocket. They had to have hired studio cats to ghost over those parts. I picked that song as an example because, to me, Korn is to music today what Poison was in their day. Sure, Fieldy sux, but so does Bobby Dall. But my point is that all of rock is littered with lackluster musicianship; that's part of what keeps the real studio cats in work!

All those utterly forgetable nu-metal bands, like 3rd Strike, Coal Chamber, Soulfly (I dig Sepultura, but Soulfly's kind of a waste), Limp Bizkit, Sevendust, HED(pe), the "New" Vanilla Ice, Flaw, Mushroomhead, Taproot, the first Staind album...

A lot of where Korn spin offs come from the productions, and the loud/soft dynamics that Nirvana made good on. There's no carbon copies like you see in the pop world, but Korn has more than it's share of more-than-imitators. A lot also comes through in the lyrical simmilarities, vocal stlye, and riffage. The use of minor keys during verses to offset the chugging power chords of the chorus, the ultra-bass heavy sound, and the bass usually clacks a little, reminiscent of Feildy. Also, the inclusion of hip-hop type beats which Korn made more acceptable in the rock medium.

Again, a lot of this comes through in the production, and there is a shifting emphasis on melody, but that Kon influence is still pretty present in the bands I mentioned above, and forgot to mention otherwise...
