Fieldy

After listening to all the bass only tracks on TB recently I'm starting to think that I'm very uptight about fret buzz. I can't stand it, and will monkey around with a bass for hours until I get it set up to play easy with no buzz. But the pros just seem to let it all hang out. Pick noise, fret buzz, they don't seem to care a whit.

The "pros" play through pro compressors, PA's and studio pre amps. Many of these recordings are raw signal going to boards. That said, I can't see how any producer would let the piss poor crap in the example above ever grace their board. That has to be one of the most horrible ISO tracks I've ever heard.

The bass in Korn is almost purely a rhythm instrument. All the melody is carried by the guitars and Mostly the vocals. It may be different than a traditional sound, but it doesn't bother me. I'm not even really a fan. I have seen them at festivals and opening, they are ok I guess. Better than Yanni.

I'm curious, has the opinion of Fieldy changed?

Let your ears be the judge:

imo terrible tone; not a big Korn fan but kinda like this song, but wow the bass alone yuk. I guess you could say if it works in the mix it's good. I can't imagine practicing alone sounding like this, but I guess he has his millions of $ to console him :)

Yeah... not a tone I'd ever use in a band with heavy guitars. Even isolated, it's hard to make out the actual notes, for me.

But whatever. If that's what he likes, then okay.

Sorry guys. My three year old got a hold of my bass again...

Mystery solved. Everyone can stand down.
