You're right. The Americans have more passion and history in other sports, like baseball, basketball and American football.
There are genuine soccer fans in the US, they watch Premier league games and follow the season and have one team they like.
I have a cheap cable TV package so I get less than 20 channels, I don't watch any of it, but will watch Mexican pro soccer when I can. My parents have this mega-cable package and get over a hundred channels. They get EPL and Champions League matches. My dad's retired so he watches that when he wants to.

It's true that for major team sports, America has traditionally been rather separatist and enjoyed their own games like American football and baseball that aren't that popular worldwide. I'm not really sure why that is. But there are certainly signs that they're starting to enjoy football as well now, taking an interest in the game and playing it rather well. I welcome that myself - the Belgium USA match was one of the best of the tournament so far. Sure, it will be a while before they learn the ropes and really become steeped in the culture of the game. That's only to be expected. But it looks like the sport is generating some real excitement over there and that's a good thing. I hope the interest is sustained, especially in the form of increased attendance at their domestic club games after this tournament.

With Neymar and Silva both
gone, what I was expecting to be a win for Germany may now just be humiliation... Of course assuming the officials actually know the rules of the game and how to apply them.

Hope it's Howard Webb who is reffing - he's not perfect but he's honest.

What's with the refs.
I saw this documentary on this German referee who wanted to be a World Cup referee. He had to get in extra-better conditioning for the physical fitness tests required of FIFA World Cup refs. I think he was trying to get into the 2010 World Cup, and he made it. It seemed to be holy grail of football referees.

Brazil did what we all thought that has to be done with Colombia: Every time James Rodríguez touches the ball, foul him. If any team in the world does that, it ends with three yellows and a red, but it´s Brazil, so they could pull that off without major penaltys.

From all of the Americas, the only ones that don´t see Brazil and Argentina with fear and nervouseness are the Uruguayans. Colombia had a clear case of stage fright.

I don´t like Neymar, but, don´t tell me that Zúñiga was not meaning to hurt him, of course he didn´t ment to break his back, but he had no chance to get the ball from where he was. I hope he gets suspended.

I was expecting MUCH more from the French.

I am expecting a Netherlands-Germany final, and that sucks, because it could be the first time that an Euro team wins a World Cup in America.

Not really surprised at the outcome of the Brazil-Colombia match. I wouldn't have been surprised if a referee joined the match and kicked the ball into the Colombia net.

Germany is still my 1st option, but would prefer a South American.

Belgium looks like a different team (just like France yeaterday) but their coach is a master making substitutions at 2nd halves.

Actually Titus, it would be fair to include me. Although I do have family fan ties to Arsenal, I didn't become a serious football fan until adulthood. Football is, by far, my favorite sport now, with the NFL and my beloved Green Bay Packers, who I HAVE rooted for since childhood, in second place.

I'll only offer this as a counter: You're right, our history with the sport is not great. But, we're starting. Is it great? No. But you have to start somewhere.


50+ years from now, we will have history stateside, the MLS will be one of the best leagues in the world, and I'll be able to say that I was a part of it when it was nothing.
