FIFA World Cup 2014

I was trying to find an analog to the Brazil defeat in other sports. The best I came up with was the US Mens Olympic Basketball team losing to Argentina in the 2004 games. This was actually the second time the US pros lost a major competition. The US lost the 2002 FIBA World Championship but that squad lacked some of our top players.

Darth - I imagine something close might have occurred in hockey. Maybe the Russians were Brazil in the last Winter Olympics (a formerly great and still a very good team) playing at home and watching a truly great Team Canada (in the German role) win the whole thing.

England losing to the US in 1950 is up there.

The 2010 team steamrolled the Russians in the quarters, 7-3 or something like that. That game was pretty lopsided.

Super Bowl XXIV would probably be it, when San Francisco demolished Denver 55-10.

if I recall the basketball losses in 2002/2004 weren't very lopsided. Upsets, yes, but not lopsided affairs like this one.

The Germans moved around the field well. As soon as their keeper had the ball, it was straight onto the offensive and, as you say, there were a load of Germany players pushing the attack. However, when they lost possession, they were all well on the defence.

Brazil on the other hand didn't attack as a team and they certainly didn't defend as one either, very lethargic and players didn't seem interested in getting into the game.

Agreed. It was one of those matches where one team looks like they have 20 players on the field. Even when it was still 0-0 it was impressive to see how they attacked in waves and returned to defend just as quickly. Reminded me of insects in a way; each man knowing exactly what he is to do and what his teammates will do in every situation. No need to think.

Unfortunately for Brazil they have another match to play. If they face Holland, they'll receive another humiliating drubbing. If they face Argentina, they'll suffer another kind of humiliation. They must be wishing they had lost to Colombia.
