FIFA World Cup 2014

Well my least favorite diver is gone. Goodbye, Netherlands. Hope you find a nice soft place to flop. One of Robben's big flops cost him a pretty good shot on goal. Poetic justice that his theatrics will go home empty. No Oscar and no World Cup. Now disappear and don't come back in four years, please.

I was torn. I really didn't want Robben to leave Brazil with the title, but part of me wanted him to get to the final so the pain of not getting it would be that much worse. He's probably got one more WC in him. Hopefully, he can have his dreams of a WC championship destroyed one more time.

Well, the best playing team is not equal to a worthy champion.

In 1954 Hungary was destroying rivals until they lost the final against A less glamorous Germany. In 1974 Holland had one the best teams in history, but lost to a not worthy Germany again.

Even in Germany, Italy won 2006 WC playing horrible, but they showed what's necessary to become champions.

You just win the Cup or not, it's not a matter of worthiness.

In Uruguay we say that you just make goals, not deserve them. Don´t know if it makes sense in English, though.

I would really like Argentina to win this one, but that implies that I must NOT maintain contact with them for four years, they are that arrogant. (At least the Buenos Aires ones).

I know most of this forum despises Liverpool with or without Suarez, but I feel my conscience is a little cleaner now that he's gone.

Get ready for some moneyball, England. It's what the Fenway Sports Group specializes in.
Damage is done, tbh, I'd have respected them, and especially FSG(IIRC they were supposed to be notoriously anti-racism), a lot more had they done the right thing and turfed him in when the racism stuff came up, rather than support him heavily, through that, and all he's done since.

Can't even watch the freaking Sox any more....

Just because it didn't work for Tottenham doesn't mean it won't work for Liverpool. Not every attempt at it works - if it did, more clubs would be doing it. That goes for both sports.
I agree with jr. Moneyball alone only goes so far, what Fenway Sports Group did in Boston is combine moneyball with real money. It didn't always work out but it has worked 3 out of the last 10 years which is fine with me.

It's ok to start watching again, they are bringing up more kids from the minors and jbj has found his groove.
In other FSG news (they have business partnership), Lebron is heading back to Cleveland. Has any major football start returned to a somewhat depressed hometown after 4 years at a more glamerous club with better weather?

No its not ok, FSG can do without my support, those scum supporting bawbags, regardless of where they get their kids from.

Ok. Now what the hell is moneyball? Jeez...

Buying cheap but effective players based on statistical analysis, IIRC, it'll never really work in a game like football. I think Moyes was one of the closest to doing well with a similar structure, just rather than pure stats, he used his own judgement.

I'm not ready for Sunday's match, Germany vs. Argentina.
On the one hand, I want Germany to win because they have a very good squad. On the other hand, I want Argentina to win because I like Lionel Messi even though their squad isn't quite the complete package as Germany's.

Agreed. I would translate it as "Goals are made, not deserved."

Ok, I should have known better to encourage a discussion of North American rounders - back to football, sort of. Is Argentina Brazil's Canada or its Mexico or Netherlands?

What?

Darth Vader vs. The Joker

Who do you root for?

Good luck everyone, the Heroic Bawbags will know where they are going soon.

Thanks to everyone for taking part and joining in the fun and for all the discussion around the tournament, enjoyed it all.

This describes exactly how I feel. Guess it's a win win for me. Then again if Germany wins I do win $40. Leaning in that direction since I'm broke right now haha

My only comment on the Suarez to Barcelona transfer is that I'll be curious to see how the inevitable controversy among the Barcelona supporters plays out in the press, if the press chooses to cover it at all.

When the board members at Barca chose to sellout and put advertising on their shirt, there was a big backlash form the supporters, but most never heard about it. The same thing may happen here.

Asado con cuero - 2
Kartoffeln und Bratwurst - 1

Predicted as such, undivided, totally subjective and fully supportive of our South American football from a brother originally from Uruguay ....and also amazed about how much Suarez has been kept alive across the "airwaves" in this place, even more than probably any other player.... Content has reached several Gigabytes already....Or "gigabites"??
