FIFA World Cup 2014

Regarding Mexico, I won't be surprised if they win all three matches and I won't be surprised if they lose all three. I have a sneaking suspicion that they will beat Brazil and lose the other two. I also expect Chile to get out of Group B at the expense of Spain or Holland.

The dark horse for me is Colombia, along with Belgium. Even though Brazil will have the ref in every match, I consider Argentina to be favorites.

The Brazilians haven't played like Brazilians since about 1990 (for me), and I think this will be the tournament that really highlights that fact.

I hope you don't take this personally, but I never understood the mentality of cheering for the land of your formers. Here in Texas we have plenty of Americans of hispanic heritage that might be 3rd or 4th generation American, yet still cheer for Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, etc even if they have zero ties to the nation of their ancestors, and might not even speak a word of Spanish. There are probably more Mexico supporters in Houston than there are USA supporters.

My grandfather was very proud of being both German and American, but the USA is the only country I would ever want to cheer for.

I can see where it might be hard to understand. But I'm a American born team Mexico supporter. Aside from soccer what it comes down to in my case, it's all about culture. The American culture doesn't appeal to me as much as my Mexican culture. I won't go as far as some extremists that say Americans have no culture, but it's just my preference. If that's hard to explain then think of this other scenario, the packers fan who lives in Houston but he grew up watching the packers since his dad is from green bay.

I agree. No matter how much of a favorite Brazil is at anytime, Mexico can take it to them at any given time. They see each other so much they know their playstyle and make for a difficult match up. With thAt said I wouldn't be too shocked if they did loose all 3 games. Shocked no, but PISSED.......lol

And I haven't seen Colombia do anything since El Pibe Valderama lol

I think they lead the South American qualifying almost from beginning to end.

I used to love watching Valderrama. I wonder if the ghost of Escobar still hang over the national side?

As much as I'd love a European side to win it, I think the climate will ultimately be the South Americans 12th man.

I have a bet on Belgium to win and now that I know Woy is taking my boy Ross, I may even have a flutter on England.

Realistically though, Argentina for me.

He's too slow and he would slow down the team. In fact, I thought he was too slow to play the last World Cup as well. They have Messi, Aguero, Higuain, Lavezzi, and Palacio (from Inter) to play his position. Which one of those guys are you going to leave out for a slow, washed up Tevez?
he's not explosive like messi but he's familiar with scoring. I suppose they'd rather have youth & spoeed on their side to match messi's style of play.
I wouldn't say he's washed up quite yet--19 goals on the year w Juventus come on now.

For any serious football fans who plan on sticking around for the entire thread, here's a thought.

Predict your finalists and winner, surprise team of the tournament, and player to watch out for.

I'll post mine in a bit.

Finalists: Germany and Brazil
Winner: Germany
Surprise team of the tournament: Switzerland (have an easy group, should have no trouble getting out)
Player to watch for: Luis Suarez :D - He will be the difference for Uruguay if England or Italy somehow miss out on getting past the group stages.

If you think France, Ecuador, and Honduras are an easy group for Switzerland, you know less than I thought. Anyone in that group could win it, or finish last.

I was a Liverpool supporter before Suarez. I will be a supporter after Suarez (which, will likely be very soon).

Although, making a diving joke as an ITALY supporter is a laugh and a half. :smug:

I think you missed the point. You criticize someone for rooting for Italy when they are American, yet you root for Liverpool and are American. By your (valid) logic, your team should be New England Revolution, not Liverpool.

My favorite team is the Houston Dynamo, as my avatar alludes to. Liverpool is my favorite English team.

My apologies. I had you confused with that Boston guy who always writes about the Red Sox in the English football thread.

Honduras barely scraped out of CONCACAF. They are a non-factor. France will likely win the group. Ecuador is good, but I think the Swiss are better.

Honduras can play, and in a round robin tournament anything can happen--absolutely not a non-factor.

And Ecuador is historically a better team than the Swiss. If anything they could be favorites for second. That group is a toss-up, with the only surprise coming if France doesn't advance. And that would'nt be shocking either.

No worries buddy, mistakes happen. Lord knows I make my fair share (as Titus and cheese will happily point out) :)

Italians have dove, so it is OK for Suarez too? In the immortal words of the great philosopher , Butthead, "Just because one thing sucks, it does not mean another thing does not suck."

PS. The Spanish and South Americans dive way more than the Italians.
