How about really early tort, like 1952, on this Vega guitar still owned and played by it's original owner. Al, my friend and gig mate for over three decades, was taken to the Vega factory by his teacher when he was 13 to order this guitar. It was his only instrument (well, his only guitar, he also plays mandolin, tenor banjo, and keyboard) until he bought a Gretsch Super Chet in 1966, which he also still owns and plays. But as you all know, when real tort was used it was not actually from tortoises but from a species of sea turtle. The pickguards have always been celluloid nitrate, and still are, though the base layers or "plys" are now mostly plastics. Of course some early Fender picks were actual "tort" shell. They are reputed to have a distinctive sound and last a long time.

Got this at MerleFest around 15 years ago, I was given it for helping this dude with an emergency guitar repair.

It went down like a drug deal... He had several, this one was consider lesser due to having it's lack of color (figure?). I liked it.

It was always a big deal to break it out amongst the serious Bluegrass pickers to check out their vintage Martin.

I assume the "drug deal" reference means that you think you are in possession of an illegal Tort pick. Ha, as if any Tort can be illegal!

This reminds me that I have a Tort pick story that I can't quite recall because it happened at the same time my buddy and I were in a Tennessee guitar store in 2003 and we saw a very good 1969 Gibson Firebird on the wall for $220, yes two hundred twenty dollars, but on layaway. Of course. Honest! We couldn't get out of town fast enough after they sold it to my buddy for not 220 but $200 because my buddy was like "$220 seems a bit much...." Holy shizzle. Long, funny story including a phone call to the store owner. The internet was alive and well then, and this was a store of at least 100 instruments, they should have known better. This really happened.

I believe it's still a big deal in Japan for shamisen users to play with real tort/turtleshell plectrums.
