FINALLY!! The Truth Revealed...Maybe

Flight has been canceled. Looks like the FAA and other Federal agencies have stepped in cause he has no permits.

Who could have known the FAA might have an issue with manned flights in homemade rockets? :D

Niw we know how the man keeps us from knowing the truth! That just stop the true truth seekers!!

There outta be a law! A law i tell ya!!

I can guarantee you that this is exactly what the flat earth folks are saying about it. :D

Anytime the phrase "motor-home-slash-rocket-launcher" is uttered, it better be in context of a cool late-70s B-movie about a suburban commando who has had enough with the local cocaine dealing gang in his town and decides to take matter into his own hands, complete with converting his Winnebago into an armored car.

I'm kind of bummed that Nutty Lou Reed's maiden rocket voyage has been postponed. I was planning on keeping tabs on what happens tomorrow. :D

He's not as stupid as he sounds. This flight 1800' up was just a preliminary flight.

He didn't expect to see the curvature of the earth on this flight but would on a subsequent flight that would reach an elevation of 'dozens of miles'.

To illustrate the point, here is a quote - "I don’t believe in science," Mr Hughes told the Associated Press (AP). "I know about aerodynamics and fluid dynamics and how things move through the air, about the certain size of rocket nozzles, and thrust. But that’s not science, that’s just a formula. There’s no difference between science and science fiction."

EDIT: In the event anyone thought this was a serious post - it wasn't.

If you are up dozens of miles, like SR-71 spy plane pilots, you would need a very sophisticated pressurized flight suit or your blood will boil. Good luck building one of those from junk yard parts. Just sayin.

His thinking is erroneous. While I'd argue that engineering in itself is not science, but rather the application of physical science (i.e, the testing of hypotheses to ascertain the falsifiability of observed phenomena), saying that he doesn't "believe in science" and then talking about aerodynamics and "how things move through the air" are just formulas, seriously negates the fact that the principles underlying those formulas were most likely substantiated through scientific methods.

He actually appears to be one of those people who is intelligent but uneducated - which oftentimes is just as bad, if not worse, than being educated and unintelligent. The problem with people like that is they often end up being dilettantes who don't have enough meta-knowledge to understand why they are seriously wrong about certain subjects (we actually have a few of these folks right here on TB). In Mad Mike's case - there are a lot of physics and astrophysics he would need to seriously bone up on to actually do what he intends. Then again, if he were actually informed on astrophysics and geology, he would realize why the whole goal of his flight would be bunk.

Edit: Whew, just saw that you said you weren't being serious. Poe's Law 'n all. :D I'm still trying to figure out if Shaq is serious when he says that he believes in a flat Earth.

Banning him from flying just feeds the paranoia. This guy will take it as proof.

The irony is that at 1,800 feet you won't see the curve of the Earth anyway.
Actually, the irony is anyone in this day and age actually believing the earth is flat.

Just one guys opinion, but believing the earth is flat seems to be a case of willful ignorance, or an attempt to lampoon those willfully ignorant believers.

You’d think so, but i know a guy who still thinks all our moon landings were shot in a hanger at Area 51.
Yeah, I can believe that. My wife actually believes in Chem-Trails. Her crazy sister convinced her. Normally, my wife is very level headed. To make it even worse she is an experienced airplane pilot and should know better. We have argued about chem-trails for years now. It absolutely drives me crazy. Did I mention her crazy sister convinced her.
Sorry for going off.....rant over.

If you want to know if the Earth is really round, it's simple: Stand on a beach by the ocean, and watch ships appear to rise out of the ocean as they get closer. Or,...
Go to Minot, North Dakota, and stand in the parking lot of the Ramada Inn just north of town, on US Hwy 83. Look to the north; see those big buildings and that control tower? That's the flight line at Minot AFB; it's 15 frickin' miles away, but the place is so flat that you can see the pesthole where I spent 4 of the most miserable years of my life. When you're bored with that - and it won't take long, - look to your right. Look closely at the horizon for a couple of minutes. Does it begin to look curved? That's because it is. The damn place is so flat and featureless, that you can depress yourself like that...

The kicker for me is if it is flat, then the end has to be somewhere. And to get from one end to the other, you would have to backtrack across the whole world. Say if the edge was down the middle of the Pacific, then you couldn't go directly from California to Japan. If it was down the middle of the Atlantic, you couldn't go directly from New York to Paris. It shouldn't be hard to find someone who has flown from one place to another, everywhere in the world, without having to backtrack. Well the hardest part might be speaking their language.

Nah.. They did it in one of the huge Environmental Testing hangars at Eglin AFB in Florida. They can duplicate just about anything they want in there... You should hear my brother's sob stories about trying to work on AH-58 Kiowa helicopters in one of those things - when the Army was cold-soak testing them, and it was -64 F inside the hangar...

Stories like this make my life difficult. My day job is high school science teacher. Flat-earth, ancient aliens, moon hoax, etc. are things that I use on a regular basis to show why the scientific process is important. Despite the collective best efforts of science teachers, and rational thinking human beings everywhere, some people still slip through the cracks believing such nonsense. Sigh..... I'll just keep fighting the fight and teach the students how to think for themselves and base their decisions on actual evidence and testing.

The thing I don't get about the flat Earthers is: For what purpose would a grand conspiracy to hide the truth that the Earth is really flat serve? What financial, social, or political benefit would "they" accrue through expending so much energy and effort to keep us uninformed sheeple in the dark about the Earth being flat? Are we to believe that the sales of Terry Prachett novels is contingent upon their premise solely appearing fictional and it's up to a vast unaffliated swath of people from high-level world government officials to lowly physics and astronomy grad students to protect the secret so a movie sequel to Hogfather will become a reality?

It’s much simpler. I don’t want to give away too much so all i’ll say is this.
