'Mad Mike' Hughes killed in homemade rocket crash in California



Daredevil "Mad" Mike Hughes was killed when his homemade, steam-powered rocket crashed shortly after takeoff near Barstow, California, supporters said.

Hughes, 64, was attempting a "cosmic quest to explore the final frontier on a shoestring budget" for the new Science Channel series "Homemade Astronauts," producers said in a statement Saturday on the channel's website.

"Michael 'Mad Mike' Hughes tragically passed away today during an attempt to launch his homemade rocket," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. It was always his dream to do this launch and Science Channel was there to chronicle his journey."

Hughes – a flat-earth conspiracy theorist – and business partner Waldo Stakes built a steam powered rocket designed to launch Hughes 5,000 feet into the air. The launch was supposed to be the first step toward an even more ambitious goal to launch Mike 62 miles into the air, clearing the Karman Line — the border between Earth’s atmosphere and outer space.

I'd read about this twit a few years ago and dismissed him as just a con man. Dismissed him and didn't consider him again. Actually learned more about him today by reading this thread.

As a previous poster noted, and I see it too, there's an anti-science thing going on. Not sure if it's world wide, but it's sure manifested in these United States. Far too many staggering, disgustingly stupid people in this country. And, unfortunately, with instant communication these days, this level of stupid spreads insanely fast. This imbecile, over time, has probably converted some ignorant, weak willed, and dull witted folk to his way of thinking.

But, what ya gonna do.

A fitting end to a societal cancer. No tears for this dullard.

More like SPLAT ! perhaps ? The things folks will do for noteriety , I dont believe for a minute he really truly believed the world was flat, it was just his way to enter the world stage and maybe the history books, in the end he'll be a footnote at best. Could be a future Ripely's entry.

Saw this news today. Mixed feelings. It's tempting to gloat. But mostly I'm just sad that a person would waste their life for something so stupid.

Real pilots have a parachute on there person that will open when they eject , conscious or not. Did he have that safety feature ? did it fail or was that bit an oversight ?

Lets leave the manned rocketeering to the pro's maybe huh
