Finger Rest--- Sacrilegious on a P?

I had an old PBass that had a thumb rest and I've seen others with them as well so I don't think it would be an issue anyway.
Maybe a white one would look better on yours, but it certainly isn't taboo.

They were factory stock on mid/late 1970s P-basses. If you like them you should add one. Nothing wrong with that.
I don't mind thumb rests on a Precision but I think the should be parallel to the strings. It seems odd to me that moving along the Thumb rest would move you closer or farther from the strings.

Double sided tape will help determine a position that is right for you.
Nothing's taboo if it's your bass.
I prefer the chrome pickup covers (aesthetically and functionally), but nothing wrong with the thumb rests either. If it helps you play better, go for it

Do it. Use double sided tape to set your favorite position first.

It's not one of the first 100 P basses ever built - it's a Squire - a mass produced consumer product of which there are countless thousands in the wild. If it works better for you with a thumb rest (or any other mod) go ahead.
Nah,,,, Meant to strike the strings with his thumb. I would put mine up by the E string.
Could you rest your thumb on the pick up? That’s what I do 80% of the time. Otherwise, I play the E without any support and rest my thumb on the E string when playing the A etc…
There are no rules, if a thumb rest works for you there, use it. I have tried and sort of “bounced off” floating thumb technique repeatedly, if I need an anchor, I’ll use the nearest rest available. The “tug bar” location is pretty useless for modern players, which is why so many old bases had extra holes left behind when they got moved. If you want to avoid drilling holes through the paint, Zero Mod makes some rests that fasten through existing pickguard screws.

why would it be taboo/ sacrilege? it's your bass, do whatever the heck you want. If it was a super rare finish pre-CBS Fender I would not go drilling into it, but a Squier? have at it

It’s a Squier. I’m sure it’s a nice bass. Adding a thumb rest won’t affect the resale value should you want to part with it. Make it yours and rock it!
