Finger Rest--- Sacrilegious on a P?

IMO, this is the fun of entry and mid-level guitars! Just have a ball and make yours. If it were going to be a collectors item one day, I could see an argument for being a little more cautious (and even then, at the end of the day, it's still yours so do what you want). Make the bass you want to play!

It feels more natural to me when I do use it than it did when it was at full thickness.
Do whatever you want with your own bass. You are the only person who has to play it.

Go for it, my prime playing spot is directly over the pickup. I try and not anchor my thumb , but it’s a hard habit to break.

Me? I find the traditional Fender thumb rest as placed above the E string near the end of the fingerboard to be nothing more than an encumbrance.
I find it way more comfortable to (a) anchor the bass with my forearm and float my thumb along the length of the E or (b) rest it against the corner/front side of the pickup. Why, because I enjoy the tactile proximity of thumb and fingertip. Having my thumb anchored on top of a thumb rest all the time would remove that.
I put thumb rests on any bass that I want to. Sacrilegious? Who cares. Only thinking makes it so. (Thanks Will.)
These are attached with double sided tape. There is a small notch that sits on the corner of pickup that is just enough to stop downward pressure from moving the thumb rest over time.

Yes, they were stock in the mid-70's. I owned a few that came that way from Fender. I have a similar issue. My first p basses came with the ashtray covers factory installed. I am so used to using the pickup cover as a thumb rest that I automatically wing up putting my hand there. Solution? Just put one on. Bridge cover? Well, one without the other is like wearing a shirt with no pants!
