Tone wars
Which tone cause the most trouble in these wars? Instrument tone, or message tone?
Seems to me that it is the perceived tone of the message that tone is subjective which gets people's backs up.
Perhaps we should have heeded Rod's original response and stopped it there. In any event, I'm sure OP has a better idea of his way forward now than he did before posting, and everyone who has posted here has contributed to his increased knowledge, and mine.
Here's what I've learned:
Wood selection must have some effect on tone, but how pronounced an effect is (very) debatable. When I do my Tele bass build, I'll choose neck woods that will give me the best chance of having a stable instrument with no perceptible dead spots, that has the look I'm after and is available at a reasonable cost (wenge and ebony are favorites). Body wood selection will be based on availability/cost, design (cap or not) and aesthetics. Assuming I build it decently, I should have a stable platform on which to mount the best electronics and hardware I can afford. String choice, EQ and pup selection should allow me to get most any tone I want.

Well said Hawkbone, especially regarding message tone. I'm guilty of that in this thread and I have been before, especially regarding this issue. I know that those in my regular social circles would likely be quite surprised at the words I choose in these discussions considering how I typically carry myself interpersonally. Venting on the internet is a strange experience - its akin to road rage to me, another thing I'm secretly guilty of engaging in from time to time. Its also not congruent with my nonviolent orientation, but its there nonetheless. I know I'm riddled with testosterone as evidenced by my bald head, deep voice and incredibly hairy body, but I can't just chalk it up to that. Oh well, I just gotta watch my tone...
yeah Beej, the net is a strange medium at times. You find yourself getting way more wrapped up in a discussion than you know you should. Maybe it's the anonymity, and maybe it's knowing you can get as worked up as you like, the only thing that suffers is the keyboard (and whatever that hits in extreme cases). When dealing face to face with someone you have to play it cool or risk having things escalate to an indictable offence.
A lot of times people are baiting others for an argument too. Bunch of young dudes sitting around fried, go to a Chris Cornell website and say he's gay for making an album with Timbaland - sit back and watch the fireworks! Disclaimer: I like that album, and I met Cornell - he didn't hit on me so at least we know he's not gay for me! Although he did put his arm around me... hf, wait a minute - maybe he is gay!
Anyway, as long as we're all at least partially amused, entertained and occasionally enlightend, it's all good.
