Finnish Bassists Club

Bad snowmobile winter. There hasn't been that much snow during the winter and actually it was in the news sometime ago, that this has been the warmest winter in Finland. If I remember correctly they started to keep records something like a little over hundred years ago.

Hi, you're #20.
I like snow as long as it's not all slushy. Slush is no fun. After a long night of good snow, everything looks beautiful in the morning with all the trees covered in white. But then the sun shines or it rains and everything melts away. Well, spring has to come eventually.

To save a dying thread :smug:

What y'all do for living? Anyone touring the world playing for full stadiums? :D
I'm now currently finishing my master's degree studies in mechanical engineering and will start working on my master's thesis after the summer. I'll probably join this club eventually:crying:

I'm an engineer, B.Sc. and M.Sc. in plastics (or actually polymer) engineering. Working full-time with product design on an international plastics piping company.

I'm keeping music as a hobby only. I would like to play more than I do, but that's up to me I guess... :hmm:

I'm, at school... not learning. I want to go home and play bass. My friend got a couple people, including me, together to start a band. We haven't really gotten anywhere yet though. My friend's the lead singer, I'm the bassist, and then we got two guitarists. No drummer yet, but I'm sure he's out there somewhere, just gotta find one. We may get together at my house next week (spring vacation) and practice together. I have a song to practice that we're gonna try and play together.
It's not a year long job, but I pick asparagus every spring. We have 1,000 plants or so, and we sell the asparagus on the road. People love it. It hasn't started growing yet, but the work should start by next month. We'll also be getting honey bees this spring, so there's another job for me. Maybe the honey we get could pay for another bass... :bassist:

I guess I should also tell something about my playing. I have been in hiatus for few years in terms with playing, but now I play in a four piece modern death metal band (vocals, guitar, bass and drums. Surprise surprise).

We got the group together last fall, but our practising has been a little bit limited by schedule issues. We got a few original songs and we play some covers also from Link Removed, Link Removed and Link Removed etc. (Links to the bands just to give the idea of the type of music that we play)

I really hope that we could get some recording done in the future. This is my fourth band of my "career", third as a bass player, and I haven't ever enjoyed playing as much as I do now.

I've gotten to play a bit more since my last post above. I had a really great gig with some friends of mine and my brother, who is a professional pianist/keyboardist. We played mainly pop, rock and soul covers with a lot of jamming and improvisations. Damn, it's easy to play when you are surrounded by great musicians! All of them are really great! :hyper: I like how you really can focus on you own performance when everything around you sound just great, exactly like you want it to. The audience was really great also. The best, you could say. :)

Not only do we seem to play well together (it was the first gig with this setting) but we also get along really well personally. All four of us have pretty different personalities, but it seems to work. Now we're fishing for more gigs with this band, and we've landed a couple already. I also have one gig coming up for the 3rd of May with another band but with the same drummer.

Before the gig last weekend, I hadn't played a gig since August last year. I haven't really practiced much in the meantime either, so my chops aren't the best at the moment, but at least I can still groove. I think the last gig proved it. The audience was dancing to all songs, and you can't possibly get better feedback than we got after this gig. :)

I'm happy again! :hyper:

So, how's everyone doing?
Everything's just fine and dandy here I guess. The printer, of course, isn't working since I have an essay to print. This nearly always happens. I'll just print at school tomorrow then I suppose. That's pretty much all that's going on here. I want to go play bass now but it's time to go to sleep. Maybe tomorrow then. :bassist:

I'm not Finnish. But my user name is. :D

I lived in Finland twice, and I speak the language at probably intermediate/advanced-intermediate level... but not completely fluent. In fact, I joke that I'm just good enough to be bad since I've progressed beyond the forgiving beginner levels. Now people actually evaluate what I say. (It's much like bass playing.)

The first time I was in Finland was 1997 when I was a student at the Unviersity of Jyväskylä, and then later I worked as an ESL teacher for young children in Rovaniemi. I got to use my music degree to teach the children the new language through song.

So... give me a number or don't, and either way I may hang around to pester the group. If any of you Finnish speakers want to practice the language with me, or are willing to allow me to practice with you, please let me know! I'd love that.

By the way, for musicians I really like Lade Laakkonen from Neljä Ruusua. I saw them live back in 2002, and he's solid.

Summer is here and the weather is excellent. And it's Friday. Think I'll go out for a beer tonight. :)

Night Prowler --- If you're better than us in icehockey, how come we won the bronze medal in the world championships some weeks back and not you? You lost 4-0 against us in the bronze match, IIRC.. :p
Btw, do you have any connection to Finland other than that you speak the same language as 6% of the Finns? (I belong to that group of people that speak Swedish as the native language)

Aikakone (=Time Machine) --- I've seen you posting on TB quite frequently and wondered why you didn't post in this thread. Well better late than never... :) Anyway, I leave it up to chairman Bett to accept you to the club.

I'm still missing at least Tsal and T-Bird in this club. Where are you guys???
