Finnish Bassists Club

Hi aikakone, you can join. You're #24. You speak Finnish and you've lived there so it's all good. :smug:
My brother has a Neljä Ruusua cd. I haven't listened to all the songs, but one day I accidentally heard Ensi Ilta and liked it. I don't know why, but that happens to me often. If I go looking for a song to listen to that I've never heard, I usually don't find anything good. Often, however, if I hear a song somewhere without planning on listening to it, I often like it. Seems kind of random I guess.

Meh, it's all rainy here today. We were supposed to go outside during one class, but then it started thundering so we had to come back inside. Tomorrow's supposed to be nice though.

Kiitos! :D

I should change my signature accordingly so I don't forget my #.

I don't have the full discography from 4R yet, but I wish I had it. I kick myself now for not buying more music while I was actually in the country. Thankfully, Kämy (their drummer) gave me a link to an online shop that sells Finnish music including 4R and ships internationally.

Hey, the thread is still alive! I haven't been on the forum for a while but I'm trying to improve my habits.

Hey, I'm from Oulu, Finland. Lived here almost all my life. Am I the first one in the club from Northern Finland? :P

Now there's at least three of us who are from Oulu. You, me and Tsal. There might be more but they are silent members :D

I'm not Finnish. But my user name is. :D

This solves the mystery, I almost asked about your user name in some other thread :D

Hey, good news for us Finns.
I was watching the news last night, and then they started talking about coffee. Turns out a couple different organizations did a study and found that coffee may prevent heart disease. Made me feel better about drinking a big cup of coffee this morning.

Hi there!

I'm bassplayer from Helsinki, Finland.

One of most famous finn-related bassist nowadays after Jaco is Jenni Tarma. She's touring with Kylie Minogue and used to tour with Melanie C.

This is her interview when she was in Finland with Kylie. And yes, she speaks great finnish.

Here is her website.

(And sorry about my bad english)

By the way, is there a list of Finnish music internet streaming stations that broadcast outside Finland? Seems most of them are blocked for Finland only access, suspect it has to do with permission rights and so on...

I wish I could listen to Radio Extreme, it was 'extreme' to listen to that station, especially during midsummer -- in the middle of Silicon Valley in a cubicle, very surreal... --Kent

Do you mean besides YLE? I can listen to a variety of stations with that. I use this link to access: Link Removed

There is a pop-up that appears, and inside that, you can select stations other than Radio 1.

By the way, I didn't say it in my previous post, but it's obvious to me that Jenni has spent lots of time speaking English. The telling sign is in the way she pauses with all those "ums" (not very Finnish at all) while thinking of her answers. So when I read her bio after making my post, I wasn't surprised that she'd been educated in the USA or is currently based out of Los Angeles.

As an aside, when I was living in Germany and visiting friends in Austria, the Austrians had gotten the idea that for some reason I was the real deal Finnish. I got so many compliments on my English that it was rather funny. Of course, it's funnier still since Finns speaking English are generally very good at it anyway and the minimal accent isn't immediately recognizable to those who might not have been around Finns.

Has anyone been doing anything interesting lately? I'm leaving for Finland next Sunday. Anyone else going on vacation?
I've been wondering for a while now, how's the price of used basses in Finland? Since I just started playing this year, I haven't noticed it before. I'm not going to be taking my T-40 with me this year, so I'm hoping I may find a inexpensive bass at a second hand store possibly. Anyone ever found any at a kirpputori? I probably won't get a chance to buy a bass this summer though, but I'm going to keep my eye open for music stores to look around in just for fun.

Neljä ruusua? Come on, you have to update. Here's some new names for you.

Von Hertzen brothers is perhaps the coolest band from Finland ever. Who would have guessed that a prog rock band could hit #1 in Finland in 2008?

Quite surpricingly the biggest name in Finland at the moment with their folk-influenced rock, Lauri Tähkä

This thread must be buried deep within the mass of months old threads that haven't been posted on. I'll post to bring it back to where people can see it.
I've seen more Finnish bassists recently. Maybe they'll join the club too.

I know I'm late for the Oulu conversation, but just wanted you to know that I'm from and in Oulu, too.

And earlier on somebody asked what people do. I'm a student. Studing to become a mediaproducer.

And I play soul, punk and somekind of post-rockish stuff. Reminds me to update my profile.

And I still drink muchos coffee. That's about it.
