So, anyone do anything interesting lately? I've been starting my bass project at school. I planed the board for the neck yesterday and have to plane some more of the wood for the wings. I hope I'll finish this project in time for the end of this semester.

I'm gonna start a bass project soon too, at school. It's gonna be all-wenge :hyper: It's my first project so I need to practice a little before I can start doing it. So you (and I) will have to wait some time. Will probably start it next autumn... But I'll keep you updated :smug:

Yeah, I think my bass is going to be more time consuming than I expected. I haven't had any practice either. I'm making my bass only from what I know from reading. I'm not sure if I will get this fully completed in time, but I hope your project goes well!

Practising is really important for a first-timer, especially if you're gonna use some expensive woods. Just take some really cheap wood (I think you can get some from school for free) and make a quick copy of the bass you're going to build. I think it's better to mess up with a cheap or free wood than with the more expensive one. And it won't even take a very long time if you don't make it so detailed. But if you're going to use some really cheap woods, don't bother to make the copy.

If the shape isn't going to be so complicated, it might go pretty well even without any practice. So decide yourself if making the copy is worth it. And be really careful with the neck, even a very tiny mistake can ruin the whole thing...

Yeah, all the wood I have for the bass has been free from school, except for the bloodwood I got for the fingerboard. My design's pretty simple too. It seems I'll be carving the whole neck out by hand now, cause I didn't get to cut out any of it on the band saw today. I brought the blank home though, so maybe i can get some excess off with a hand saw first, then I'll start with the spokeshave. I do have a bass building book and the vast amounts of knowledge here on TB to guide me as well. Hopefully nothing will go wrong with the neck, but if something does happen, I have a whole bunch more of 2 inch maple boards that the teacher ordered for me this year.
So yeah, some of the wood I have for the wings isn't really replaceable (much of it is nicely figured scrap pile finds), but I didn't pay for any of it, so I'm not worried about the money issue.

Check out room "Mnet - Kimppatilaukset" at muusikoiden.net. There are these kind of group orders made time to time. Currently there is one in progress for capital area.
