Where do you live (I gather you are not in the USA), what kinds of music do you like, and what is your budget? Do you feel you must buy a new instrument, or are you willing to try a used axe? Do you have access to a friend or good repair person who can evaluate and help set up your instrument, particularly if you try to buy used? Do you have a nearby music store with which you could build a relationship over time? What kinds of equipment are being used by the bands and bassists you really like?
Folks say the recent Fender Squiers are well-made. Over the years, I have seen excellent quality control from Yamaha throughout their line, from student basses to the very top end. I don't know as much about Ibanez, and some question whether their thin-neck design (optimized for metal shredders, it seems) holds up well at the low end of their budget range, but I've always thought them to be a reputable company. I have not played them, but suspect that Warwick's entry-level instruments are good. If you have access to the G&L "Tribute" series, you may end up with a very good and flexible instrument for the money. If you are in Japan or Europe you may have access to brands I've never heard of, but which make fine instruments.
If you can buy used, ideally with some assistance from someone who knows about basses, you can get a better instrument at the same price point as a new, but lesser axe.
Your best bet is to go to a large music store and try out a lot of instruments, listening to the sound and paying attention to your body as you hold and play each axe, both standing (bass on a strap) and sitting. Even if something jumps out at you but you can not afford it, you will have learned something about what you like, and can make your decisions in a way that leads down that path.
Welcome to bassdom!
